Making Edits / Manage the Timeline
Subtitles of the Movie
Within no time at all your sequence is going to be a lot longer then just three shots and in fact your timeline of your sequence is going to span across multiple minutes, typically and you're going to scroll back and forth using the scroll bar to look at different parts of your sequence. So that's what this module is all about, it's managing the view of the timeline because this becomes a very handy skill as you start to work with that timeline more and more and start to build more and more shots, more and more audio tracks, layer in some of the video tracks and so on and so on. The things that we're doing through out the rest of this tutorial. So two keyboard shortcuts that you will quickly become familiar with is the option plus that which zooms you into your sequence and the option minus. Now again why is this important, because sometimes you want to look at that the overall sequence itself and notice by pressing option minus on the keyboard I zoom away from my sequence so I can see maybe the whole thing and pick a spot in the sequence very easily or if I do option plus I zoom into my sequence so much so that I might be able to then just deal with a frame at a time and now I can really fine tune my edits, again looking at techniques we'll use later on, we can fine tune to just a frame or two or slide an audio track a frame or two to synch something up or introduce a visual before we actually see it, that's a common way to transition between scenes, lots of different instances where you will want to zoom into your sequence by using the option plus and option minus, again zooms you out. Now you could if your mouse person, you could go down right here and do the same thing and if I hover the mouse long enough, maybe not here, you should see the zoom control but this does the same thing, I can zoom in and out of my sequence as you can see that I'm doing right here. Another helpful thing if again you're a mouse person is that you should be able to drag and expand or contract your zoom or your scroll bar and then grab the middle of it to move through out your sequence, left and right, forward and backwards in your sequence. There's also a little purple line, this little indicator tells you where the current play head is and if you're dealing with part of your sequence down here maybe you fine tune it and you want to jump right back to the play head, all you have to do is give that play head a click like that and then we go right back there which is that part that you can see in the cams. It should be this visual here corresponds to that little purple line in the timeline. The last thing I want to show you is this right over here and this will toggle the timeline track time, this is a shift T and if you press this repeatedly, you can again toggle the frame height or you can select the individual icons down here in this little tiny box. So if I want to make my tracks bigger I can do that and make them bigger still like that. That can help you fine tune some of your audio controls, that's where that's most commonly used, it's not used so much for video editing although of course you can get a lot better idea of what the picture looks like then you can when your looking at the picture like that. Sometimes you have to squint depending on your display size and things like that or if you make it very small, now you just deal with the tracks and now I want to deal with multiple tracks at once or at least see multiple tracks as easily as possible without all of these pictures getting in the way. But again shift T helps you toggle through those different height variations in your track. So again, we don't do much editing in this module here, but governing what's going on in the timeline and your ability to view what's in the timeline is a very important skill going forward. So we have the scrollbar the zoom options here and of course we've learned the keyboard shortcuts of option minus and option plus to help us along the way.
