Aperture Interface / Using Multiple Monitors

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we're going to talk about using multiple monitors with Aperture. If you have two monitors and, by the way, Aperture considers a projector as a second monitor, you have a variety of choices as to how to use the second monitor. With two monitors, Aperture provides two Viewers. You control the secondary Viewer from the Viewer Mode Pop-Up Icon in the lower right part of the interface. Currently I have my second monitor or the secondary Viewer set to Desktop so that I see Aperture on my primary monitor and I see my desktop on the second monitor. I can opt to set my second monitor Blank, in which case it will be literally blank. Alternatively, I can set it to Mirror. In that case, the second monitor is a mirror of what's on the first monitor. I can also choose Alternate. When I choose Alternate, the display on the primary monitor shows the selection, but my second monitor shows only the image that is the primary image; the one that's indicated by the heavy white border. So only one image is showing up on my second monitor even though the complete selection shows up on the primary monitor. If I choose Span, then Aperture splits the display of the currently selected images between the two Viewers. For example, with these four images, two are on one monitor and the other two are on the other monitor. You can use the Span Mode to compare images and show one image per monitor. If you do so, make sure that they're calibrated identically. In addition, the second Viewer will be in Full Screen Mode and it will have a Control Bar at the top showing all the various icons that you would typically see in Full Screen Mode. If you choose Span and create a slideshow, you'll see the slideshow on your main monitor and what's coming up next on the second monitor. That can be really helpful if you're giving a presentation using a projector as the main monitor and you want to have a clue what's coming next without the audience seeing. Most of the time, for my personal workflow, I set my second monitor to Desktop. But you'll need to choose what works the best for you.
