Aperture Interface / Views pt. 1

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, I'm going to talk about the different views that you can use in Aperture. One of the things that I really like about Aperture is the well-thought-through interface options and the ease with which you can modify the view to suit your needs. I'm going to talk about three regular views, as well as Full Screen Mode. By default, Aperture opens in the Regular Mode, which offers three basic views; a view that contains the browser, which is down here, and the viewer; a view that contains only the viewer and one that contains only the browser. We can also come up here to the icon that says View in the Toolbar at the top and choose Viewer Only, Browser and Viewer or Browser Only. I use the Browser Only View in order to find an image within a Project. But most of the time I use the Browser and Viewer Mode combined. In any of the modes that show a browser, you can use the Shuttle Control to quickly move among the images. You can move it to the left; it's already all the way at the left. Move it to the right, move it all the way to the right and it moves quickly. Move it a little bit to the left and it moves slowly. When I let go it stops wherever it is. That makes it easy to quickly scan through your images. As with most things in Aperture, there is a keyboard shortcut for this. Pressing J will move it to the left, K will stop it and L will move it to the right. So you can either use the Shuttle Control or the Shortcut Controls. When I want to concentrate on optimizing a particular image, I often use the Viewer Only Mode. That offers nearly a Full Screen view of my image. At that point I sometimes toggle off the Inspector Panel by clicking the Inspector Icon in the top left of the interface and I can opt to get a floating Inspector by pressing H. I can resize this and place it wherever it's convenient. I can also opt to make my image even larger by going to View, Hide Toolbar and that hides the Toolbar at the top to give me an even cleaner view of my image. I'll put the Toolbar back and return to our more customary view. You can control how many images appear in the Viewer. Now, I can select multiple images and if I have Show Multiples shown, then they will all show up in the Viewer, or at least as many as will fit. However, if I choose Show One, then only one image will show. The one that will show is the one that has the heavy white border around it because it's the current primary image. If I click on one of the other images I selected, it becomes the primary image. And if we go back into the Show Multiple View, you'll see that they all appear in the Viewer and they all have a little thin white border around them to indicate that they're selected. If I were to make an adjustment or apply keywords or a different rating right now, it would affect all three of these images. If I only wanted it to affect the primary image, then I could go to Edit, Primary Only, which I can also access from this little button with the Number One Icon over here. Notice that now my primary image has the heavy white border but the other images that are in the Viewer do not have a white border around them. They have a white border in the Browser in order to remind you that they are selected. But in the Viewer, they don't and that tells you that anything that you do right now will only affect the primary image. That's really an important concept to remember. Any of these changes that you make right now will also affect what shows up in Full Screen Mode. We'll talk about Full Screen Mode in another movie.
