Subtitles of the Movie (Adobe Photoshop Image Restoration / Photoshop CS / Lens Blur pt.1)

þÿ [00:00:00.0] One of the really nice but yet esoteric new tools in Photoshop CS is the lens blur tool. And what it does is not artificially recreate depth of the field with the gradual progression of blurriness [00:00:13.0] that naturally occurs during a naturally occurring depth of field situation in your photography. Now as all film photographers know the further away the distance is from your point of focus the longer or deeper the depth of field will be. [00:00:29.0] Conversely the closer the point of focus is the shallower the depth of field is and it is outside the scope of this particular lesson to discuss the subject of depth of field. [00:00:40.0] If you don t know what that is go research it and come back and do this lesson. That's just more than we can get into at this particular time. So we are going to go in to this particular photograph that was taken in 1966. [00:00:50.0] I was thirteen years old with my first camera ever. This is a lonely country road in North Carolina. And a little truck that you see on this country road is our point of focus. So what we are going to do is go here to our channels tab. [00:01:06.0] And we are going to hit Q, that brings up our quick mask, and we are going to set this so that we get our overlay here. And then we are going to go to the gradient tool and we're going to do a vertical gradient. [00:01:19.0] And you kind of have to play with this. It is something you have got to play with, experiment with. And if it does not look exactly right when we get done it is only because we haven t sat here and tweaked but you get the basic idea of how to do this. So just bear with me here. [00:01:32.0] I am going to establish a gradient on our mask up to about here. And we hit Q again to create the selection. [00:01:44.0] Then we go up to filter - blur - lens blur and then we have some adjustments that we can make right here. [00:01:54.0] This one, for this particular lesson, does not pertain to what we are doing but if you were using an alpha channel to designate your selection then that would be located right here and you would bring that in. [00:02:07.0] But at this point of time we're really doing a selection so we don t need to concern ourselves with this. Down here is where most of your attention is going to be focused-- on this dialogue box. That is the iris and over here there are a number of selections that you can choose from. [00:02:20.0] Different cameras have different shaped irises. And Photoshop, in an attempt to be as anal as it can possibly, be has included all of the different kinds of irises that will be most popular in cameras so far. [00:02:32.0] Now there is a triangular, the triangular iris that gives one result. I would say most of them are 6-sided or hexagon irises. And then you can adjust the blade curvature, which show me what that does [00:02:48.0] because I don t see any result when I play with this. The rotation-- I never even heard of the discussion of rotation of the blades of an iris in a camera, so whatever that is has escaped me 100%. [00:03:03.0] Now at the bottom this is something that you really ought to pay attention to because, as every film photographer knows, you will have grain in the photograph even though it is out of focus down here. [00:03:15.0] So we have a very shallow depth of field; we are trying to create a shallow depth of field, or at least shallower than it was when it was naturally taken. So you've got to replace that film grain so it does not look artificial. [00:03:26.0] And this is what this is. You can go up to here and just stimulate 400 ASA film; there it is. If you want to take it completely out then there is that too. [00:03:36.0] But I would set it in about midway and I will give you some believable grain in your blur. Now this is a bit much. I am going to bring this down a little bit to reduce the intensity of that blur. [00:03:47.0] And I am going to keep that. So click OK and go up and select deselect. Now we are also going to in this image put a little bit of blur behind. We are going to narrow the depth of field on this. [00:04:00.0] You have to be careful when you are doing this stuff because every experienced photographer knows and every photo editor knows again to re-state what we said at the beginning of this lesson: The further away the focal point of your subject is the deeper the depth of field, [00:04:15.0] meaning that things behind and in front of that image are going to be in focus much more so than if the subject were very close to the camera. That is why you see these cheap Japanese movies and you see the shops downtown and one building is in focus [00:04:30.0] and the building next to it is out of focus because those are models that they are shooting and they're not compensating for the change in the depth of field for the perceived difference in distance. They are trying to fool you and they do not mess with that stuff, [00:04:42.0] you can see that all the time. All of those old Godzilla movies have that stuff in it and you can see it instantly. Right now for the second half of the depth of field construction we are going to hit Q again. Do the exact same thing and we're going to instead go up here to the gradient. [00:04:58.0] And we are going to pick this area right here. We are going to come down here to about say right here, just pick an arbitrary figure. And we hit Q again to create the selection. [00:05:09.0] Let us invert it and we go up to filter - blur - lens blur, there it is. And there is our result. Now obviously that looks artificial, okay? This should be in a lot more in focus than this should be. [00:05:24.0] So we are going to adjust it and we are going to adjust it down so it comes in just barely out of focus, much less out of focus because of the physics of depth of field than this area. [00:05:40.0] But yet it is still different-- before and after. We are only looking at the top area now, okay, before and after. Right we are going to click OK and we keep that and there you have it. [00:05:54.0] That is the very simple version of the lens blur tool. Now coming up next we are going to look at another photograph that will give you a more complicated scenario and but it is very easy to deal with. [00:06:06.0] You just have an extra step in there. But you stay with us and we will complete the lesson in the next movie. [00:06:12.0]
