þÿ [00:00:00.0] One of the improvements in Photoshop CS is the histogram. And we all know what the histogram is, we worked with it before, we see what it does and how it helps us and what it can tell us about our image [00:00:13.0] and how we use it to adjust the image to look its very best but it has been limited in the amount of information that it does provide. Well the histogram palette solves that problem and they placed it up here with navigator [00:00:24.0] and the information tab and we click on it and we get a representation of each of the three channels of color information in our image. There are a lot of different ways to view the histogram. [00:00:37.0] We can compact it, meaning we can look at all three RGB channels simultaneously as they are superimposed over each other. We can look at an expanded view which gives us statistical information about each of the channels in the RGB spectrum. [00:00:51.0] And then we can do the all channels view which we had up there originally and we have a separate histogram for the blue channel, a separate histogram for the green, and also for the red channel. Now as we look at this combined histogram and this is really an overlay of all three channels superimposed over each other. [00:01:08.0] We see that the amount of green information is greater than either the red or the blue and as we look at our image that would make sense because in this image we have a large area here that is part of trees and foliage from the forest. [00:01:23.0] It is dark, but it is there. It is represented as a larger histogram than either the red or the blue. Now we can look at this as a combined RGB value for bringing us more information about the brightness and luminosity than anything else [00:01:39.0] and we can look at the red channel individually, we can look at the green channel and the blue channel. We can also look at luminosity, which we have never been able to look at before. [00:01:51.0] I guess we have on a default basis but specifically looking at the histogram of the luminosity of an image hasn t been available until now. And then again we can superimpose each of the separate colors over each other so that we can look at how they relate to each other. [00:02:05.0] Now one of the things that you can do that I think that is really kind of nice about the histogram palette is that we can make adjustments on our image and look at the effect that the adjustment is going to have. [00:02:16.0] Now in this particular case normally we would do an adjustment layer on this and then really actually this is one of those times I wish I had dual monitors because I'm a little bit crowded here on my real estate. So let us do the best we can here. [00:02:30.0] We are going to look at the curves dialogue box and as we make adjustments in the entire RGB spectrum we see each of the histograms react kind of together. [00:02:43.0] If we pull down we make the image darker we see the histograms move towards the darker sections of the histogram visualization. I guess for lack of a better word. [00:02:57.0] And if we brighten the image we see the histograms expand. And the other thing we can do is go up here and let us look at the red channel and if we choose our red information we can see the reaction in the red palette. [00:03:10.0] If we go to green we see the same thing. So if you want to adjust your image [00:03:24.0] statistically rather than visually looking right at the image then you can do it. And there might be occasions for a professional application for instance that sort of thing. [00:03:37.0] And the next thing we look at is the levels dialogue box. We can also make adjustments with the levels dialogue box that will be reflected again in our histogram palette. [00:03:49.0] And just looking at the basic adjustment of adjusting the tone we can see that the reactions in our histogram palette are immediate and we can see the immediate visual representation of what we have done. [00:04:02.0] I don t like that particular adjustment because it bleaches out certain sections of the coyote s face. We will back off on it. Bring this down. Look at it. That's better. Now let us increase the gamma. [00:04:18.0] Take a look at it. Looks much better and our histogram is reflected accordingly. We can also go up here in the levels dialogue box and look at red. We can adjust the red individually and look at how the histogram reacts. [00:04:34.0] Say you want to adjust the histogram down just a bit. We can look at the way the histogram reacts and just do whatever suits your fancy. We can also look at green. [00:04:49.0] We can move the white slider, use the black slider and then of course do the same thing for blue. [00:05:04.0] And one thing I want to point out to you in this image is that there is some clipping going on here. [00:05:20.0] And clipping is you have got information that is being thrown out by Photoshop that displays this image. And that could be a bad or a good thing. [00:05:30.0] It is keeping the image from being over saturated but then it is throwing out some of the tonal information which could be little ambiguous about whether that is a good or a bad thing and I do not think it really matters in this particular shot. But at least you know there is clipping going on and you can make your adjustments accordingly. [00:05:46.0] So that is the histogram palette in Photoshop CS; it gives you a lot of information that you may or may not be able to use. [00:05:55.0]

1. DEFINITIONS

"VTC" refers to Virtual Training Company, Inc.
"You" refers to the user or subscriber.
"Software" refers to the VTC training content and software.

2. LICENSE: VTC hereby grants to You a worldwide, non-royalty bearing, non-exclusive license to use the Software according to the provisions contained herein and subject to payment of the applicable subscription fees.

3. RESTRICTIONS: You may not do any of the following:

Save the Software to Your hard disk or other storage medium; permit others to use the Software except as specified by addendum; modify, reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software; make derivative works based on the Software; publish or otherwise disseminate the Software. VTC, Inc., VTC Online University, and the Virtual Training Company site is owned and operated by VTC, Inc. as a corporation of record.
All materials on this site are the property of VTC unless otherwise specified. No material from these pages may be copied, reproduced, republished, downloaded, uploaded, posted, transmitted, or distributed in any way. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any other purpose is a violation of U.S. copyright law and other proprietary rights. The VTC Online University is access to every VTC training tutorial in our library. You pay a flat fee for access to these titles. You are billed according to your renewal selection below, and can renew monthly, yearly, or in any other increment offered. If you choose to be billed monthly, you will be billed every 30 days for the subscription until you request the subscription be cancelled. Our terms of service state that you must cancel a monthly subscription at least two business days before your renewal date. These two days give us enough time to ensure that you will not be charged again.

5. LIMITED WARRANTY: VTC warrants that the Software, if operated as directed, will substantially achieve the functionality described. VTC does not warrant, however, that Your use of the Software will be uninterrupted or that the operation of the Software will be error-free or secure. In addition, the security mechanisms implemented by the Software have inherent limitations, and You must determine that the Software sufficiently meets Your requirements. VTC also warrants that the media containing the Software, if provided by VTC, is free from defects in material from the date You acquired the Software. VTC's sole liability for any breach of this warranty shall be, in VTC's sole discretion: (i) to replace Your defective media or Software; or (ii) to advise You how to achieve substantially the same functionality with the Software as described; or (iii) if the above remedies are impracticable, to refund the subscription fee You paid for the Software. Only if You inform VTC of Your problem with the Software during the applicable subscription period will VTC be obligated to honor this warranty. VTC will use reasonable commercial efforts to repair, replace, advise, or refund pursuant to the foregoing warranty within thirty (30) days of being so notified. If any modifications are made to the Software by You during the warranty period; if the medium is subjected to accident, abuse, or improper use; or if You violate the terms of this Agreement, then this warranty shall immediately terminate. This warranty shall not apply if the Software is used on or in conjunction with hardware or software other than the unmodified version of hardware and software with which the Software was designed to be used as described.

THIS IS A LIMITED WARRANTY, AND IT IS THE ONLY WARRANTY MADE BY VTC OR ITS SUPPLIERS. VTC MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTIES' RIGHTS. YOU MAY HAVE OTHER STATUTORY RIGHTS. HOWEVER, TO THE FULL EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE DURATION OF STATUTORILY REQUIRED WARRANTIES, IF ANY, SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE ABOVE LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD. 7. TERMINATION: This Agreement shall automatically terminate if You fail to comply with the restrictions described herein. Your obligations to pay outstanding subscription fees shall survive any termination of this Agreement.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES AND UNDER NO LEGAL THEORY, TORT, CONTRACT, OR OTHERWISE, SHALL VTC OR ITS SUPPLIERS OR RESELLERS BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY CHARACTER, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF GOODWILL, WORK STOPPAGE, COMPUTER FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION, OR ANY AND ALL OTHER COMMERCIAL DAMAGES OR LOSSES. IN NO EVENT WILL VTC BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES IN EXCESS OF THE AMOUNT VTC RECEIVED FROM YOU FOR A LICENSE TO THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF VTC SHALL HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY OTHER PARTY. THIS LIMITATION OF LIABILITY SHALL NOT APPLY TO LIABILITY FOR DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY RESULTING FROM VTC'S NEGLIGENCE TO THE EXTENT APPLICABLE LAW PROHIBITS SUCH LIMITATION. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THIS EXCLUSION AND LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
