Image Types / Adjusting Contrast with the Levels Dialog Box
Subtitles of the Movie
Let's take a look at the levels dialog box to help us get some contrast in this image. We have already established the layers adjustment level here and we just click on the little histogram icon, double-click on it and here we go. As we learned, we have very little in the way of the upper, very upper ends of the brightness spectrum in this image and so we are going to adjust for that, and this is going to give us some contrast; we are going to adjust for that, just like that. And what that does is helps us add more to the upper brightness areas of the tonal spectrum, and it does not detract from the darker areas. But if you wanted to, I mean you could bring this in, and bring this up, the closer these two come together the better the contrast. And I know you are saying to yourself, well it looks like what you just did on the contrast slider. Indeed it does; that's why you got to be careful how you use this, that is why you don't want it to just go whap, whap and walk away from it, because that is not the result you are looking for. Okay? These are very intricate controls that can do wonders, and I'll tell you the way I use these; I use these in conjunction with the curves dialog box, but just to get you started, you go from here to a flat image and if you will brighten it up and give it just a bit of contrast and you come over here and then what I do, and this is my own thing, is I take the gamma adjuster and I bring it lighter than it looks like it needs to be. I'd say right about there, just above where it looks like it is right. That looks all washed out and indeed it does and it is supposed to at this stage of the game. I am going to go to the curves dialog box right now and show you what can be done.
