Let us take a look at some of the more sophisticated tools we have to establish contrast in an image. First up I think is going to be the levels dialog box, and we have already set up the adjustment layer for the levels control. So we double-click our little icon here and bring up our histogram that we have all seen before. And from previous lessons we know that there is very little information in the upper tonal areas of the image, so we adjust and add contrast now, by taking the brightness or the light end of the spectrum we take that slider and move it towards the center just inside where this histogram ends. Notice that the gamma slider also moves proportionately to add little bit brightness for the middle ranges, so that your image does not look all distorted and unnatural. So Photoshop knows to move the gamma slider to compensate, now one of the things you can do if you wanted to, now this is only showing this to you for effect but you can move this in, the closer these two are together, the higher your contrast is going to be. Okay, just like that. I know what you are saying, well that looks just like what you did on the contrast slider a minute ago, and indeed it does. But you are not going to do it this way; you do not want your images to look stupid and that is just by demonstration what can do. Maybe you want a special effect of some kind. But for this particular image, all that was needed was to bring a little bit more into the upper ends and then make the compensating adjustment on the gamma so that you have added contrast. Now in and of itself it does not look too terribly bad, I think there is more that you can do with this image and indeed that is what we are going to do right now. Now this is my own invention, this is the way I use the levels dialog box is that I take the gamma, and I push it above where it looks like it ought to be. That looks like it's real washed out, the colors are kind of faded and bland and indeed that is how it looks, that is how it is supposed to look at this stage of the adjustment process. Coming up next, we are going to use this gamma slider in conjunction with the curves dialog box to finish off our contrast adjustment.
