Let's just keep right on going with this image of Chelsea; she's so cute and we've done such a good job of the skin treatment and the eyes and so on, on this image there's no reason not to just keep right on going. And what we're going to do is look at how to convert this into black and white, and what we're going to do is go to Enhance but before we actually do the black and white conversion one thing I would like to do is bump the Saturation just a bit, and the reason for that is because that's going to help us on our conversion. So we hit OK on that, and when we go to black and white it will help the Contrast and give us more to work with, and let's click on Portraits, and that's the default conversion right there but let's adjust it because we do have a lot of reds and believe it or not there are some greens in there, too. Not too much in the way of blue. Now do we want to increase the Contrast, no, that doesn't look too bad. I wish we could look at our Histogram when we're doing this but there's no view of the Histogram until after we click OK. I don't want any of this to be blown out, so let's go ahead and hit OK and see what we've got and then we can look at our Histogram. We're in good shape. We're in actually very good shape. We're right, probably a tiny, tiny little bit is clipping but that's alright, we're looking fine. Now what we're going to do is come up to Adjust Lighting again and experiment with Shadows and Highlights. Let's just, let's just take a look and see what we can do to just give a tiny little bit of increased Dynamic Range on this black and white shot. Let's come down on the Highlights just slightly and you know what, I would go for not lightening the shadows after all, after looking at it. Well, I'm ambiguous. Let's go ahead and leave it because we can correct it later. But we did need to bring these highlights down just a bit. We don't need to mess with the Contrast. Let's hit OK. And I like that. Let's Crop this, and we've got a lot of dead space over here, let's bring it right to the shoulder and double-click on it. That looks pretty good. Now let's put an Effect on it. I like the photography stuff better. Double-click on this, see how that looks. Find our Layers, which are right here, and let's reduce the Opacity Ð this should all be review for you, but I think what I'd rather do is go ahead and see what the Overlay looks like. No, we don't like that. It's called Multiply. Let's go back to Normal, let's go to Soft Light. Well now that's not too bad. It doesn't do enough. OK, we reduce the Opacity but let's do it again, give it another shot of Effect, reduce the Opacity just a little bit, Overlay again. Nope, we don't like that. We're just experimenting. We're just looking and seeing what looks good. What we like and what we don't like. And I'm leaning toward this right here. Alright, let's bring this up to about right there and we'll call it Done and then we'll come back up here, go to Shadows and Highlights and there we got it. That nails it. That nails it right there. That's a good black and white conversion. I like that. I like that a lot as a matter of fact. So, just one of the ways to approach conversions to black and white. A million different ways to combine things. Some of these effects up here, you know, you're kind of getting a feel for how all this works. You're bringing all these things together and group them and combine them, experiment and back up and go forward until you simply see what you like. So there we have it. A black and white conversion in Photoshop Elements 7.
