Basics / Preferences / Color Settings pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

Now, in terms of Memory Usage, let Elements do that itself. It really knows how to maximize, listen to your computer and it sees how much memory it has and then it decides how much it needs and that's a very efficient process and I would let Elements figure that out for itself. But really all that's doing is designating how much of your internal RAM is dedicated towards the program itself. History States; now, you're going to learn about History States in the Edit section, but you want this to be 50 and the cache levels to be six. Just leave these two exactly the way they are. Actually, the higher the better to a point, but 50 is a good round number. Now, we're going to go to Display and Cursors. Leave this the way it is. I mean, unless you really have experience with Elements and as you gain more and more experience in doing things and you want to change this stuff, then go ahead and change it but if you change it now before you really had time to learn Elements, you're going to confuse yourself so just leave this on the default settings. Transparency; leave that on the default settings. You're just going to confuse yourself. Units and Rulers; now, when you go to crop images, you can crop for the Internet or you can crop for printing. If you're going to crop for printing, you're going to have rulers as inches. If you're going to crop for the Internet, you're going to crop in pixels. So it's, you know, you might need to come to this section if you know you're going to be doing all your editing for the Internet. You're going to come back and change you rulers to pixels. If you know you're going to print, change it to inches. Column Size; leave this default. Print Resolution; 300 and in Screen Resolution 72. Now, 300 is a good number. I use 360 because, well, I could get into a long-winded explanation why but I like 360 better than 300 but again, that's completely your choice as to how you want to set this up. Screen Resolution at 72 is a perfect number. Photo Project Unit in inches because these are the things that the calendars and your books and all that are made and just do it in inches. Let's see. Grid; leave that as a default setting. Plug-ins; leave that as a default setting. Type or Text; Use Smart Quote; yes. Show Asian Text Options; obviously if you're Asian you want that, if you're using those languages. Missing Enable, Missing Glyph Protection; yes. Show Font Names in English. Font Preview size should be medium. Just all, if you're visually challenged you might want to go to large or extra large depending on how your eyesight is. So all of these things, every one of these things is personal preference only, however you want things to be. This is setting up the program on its initial installation when you first come to it and you want everything to run the same way after that. OK? So you hit OK after all the choices and made and all of those things will be effected. Now, the next important thing that you got to know is Color Settings. Now, if you know that your images are going to print, then click this. It says Always Optimize for Printing and what that means is that your photos will be imported into the Adobe RGB Color Space, which is a nice, wide gamut that will make your images print really, really beautifully. OK? Now, if you're going to be doing this on the Internet, then do Always Optimize Colors for Computer Screens and it will run to the sRGB Color gamut or color range and this is a narrower color range than the Adobe RGB Color Space but this is what every computer screen made everywhere looks at is sRGB. And so if you edit in the sRGB, when people go to look at your images on the Internet, it will be closer to what you wanted to appear if you edit in the sRGB Color Space. So as you bring your images in, know what you're going to do with them, come here, change this before you open the images. Keep in mind; this has to be done before you open the images, not after. OK? Now, allow me to choose. What happens is that as you bring the images in, it's going to ask you which of these two you want. It's always easier to know what you're going to do ahead of time before you start doing it. So check one of these two depending on what you're going to do and that is Preferences and Color Settings in Elements 6.
