Basics / Edit

Now, before we actually bring in some photos, I must tell you about some settings in Elements that are very important to set correctly if you're to get the best possible results out of your work. Now, basically when people take pictures these days, there are two things they will do with them; either print them or send them in emails or display on a website; basically anything that has anything to do with the Internet. So in order for your shots to look right in either end result, you have to do your settings appropriately. So now let's take a look at the Settings section and get this boring, technical stuff out of the way so we can do the fun stuff. But these boring, technical settings will really make your pictures look way better. The way we look at the settings is to go to Edit, click on the Edit and you'll see a drop-down list and you come all the way to the bottom where it says Color Settings and then click on that and you'll see four choices here. The first is No Color Management. I don't recommend that you use that. That's like a more-advanced setting and unless you have a firm understanding of the differences between sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces, you probably shouldn't use either two or three. Now, if you're going to put your images on the Internet, then use number two. It says Always Optimize Colors for Computer Screens. That's another way of saying that we're going to set our colors for the Internet. Now, this setting will keep all the colors you see on the screen within that range, ensuring an accurate display for any device that supports the sRGB color space and if you put your images on the Internet, they're going to be in the JPEG format and that also means that it's going to be in the sRGB color space or color gamut. Now, if you're going to print your images and you really want them to look good, OK, choose number three. It says This Setting Will Display Your Photos Based on the Colors Within the Adobe RGB Color Space Commonly Used for Printing Images. And the reason there is a difference is because the Internet just can not show the number of colors that are capable of being printed on most modern printers these days; especially when you take your prints down either to the drugstore or to a print house to be printed. Those are very sophisticated printers and they're able to really generate colors that the Internet just can not generate. So always check number three if you're going to be printing your images. Now, the important thing to remember on this is to make these setting changes before you open your photos in the Organizer or the Editor; very, very important.
