Subtitles of the Movie (Adobe Photoshop CS5 / Resizing & Cropping Images / Resizing Using Resampling)

Alright, let's talk about resizing images with Resampling now. Now what I've done here is I left my screen exactly the same way that it was at the end of the previous exercise, so I haven't changed anything here and what I'd like to do with you here is I want to Reset the dialog box and then start resizing with Resampling. So, I'm going to hold down Option, or Alt there on the Windows side and click on my Reset button, that brings us back here and then make sure to turn on Resample Image down at the bottom. Now, in an earlier video I started to talk about Resampling and I started to talk about some of the different options that we have in the drop-down menu here. Let's actually see a practical example of this fella at play here. So, what I'm going to do here is obviously everything is back the way that it was before. There's the Pixel Dimensions, the 2560 pixels in Width by 1920 pixels in Height. The 35 and a half and the 26 and a half for the physical size and the 72 pixels per inch for my Resolution. Now what I'm going to do here is I'm going to drop my Resolution to just 10 pixels per inch and what's interesting to note is the physical size of my image, the Document Size, doesn't change. It's still 35 and a half inches by 26 and a half inches, however, take a look at the Pixel Dimensions. The Pixel Dimensions have been reduced. Now I'm all the way down to 356 pixels in Width by 267 pixels in Height. So what happened to all of my pixels? Well, they got deleted, or they will be deleted when I click on OK, because they're not needed,,, right? So, what I'm doing here essentially is I'm reducing the size of my image and if you recall earlier I said reducing the size of your image is usually OK, it's when you try and make it larger, that's when you run into trouble. So, when we go about reducing our image we're just deleting information, right, so usually it's no big deal. However, as I just said, it does become a big deal when we try and make our image bigger, so check this out. I'm going to switch my Resolution now from just a paltry 10 pixels per inch to a whopping 300 pixels per inch. Once again, the Document Size doesn't change. It's still 35 and a half by 26 and a half, however, check out my Pixel Dimensions up at the top now. We now have 10,667 pixels in Width by 8,000 in Height. So once again, where do all the extra pixels come from? Well, what I'm asking Photoshop to do is essentially make them up out of nothing, out of thin air and again, it's all about the mathematical algorithm that I want Photoshop to use when it goes about making stuff, alright? So, again, this is where we run into trouble. Now, Photoshop is going to do the best it can for you, but oftentimes you're going to wind up getting a very pixelated, a very damaged looking image and, again, if you'll recall from some of the info I gave you earlier, resizing with Resampling does change the pixel count, obviously. I gave you a massive example of that and it is going to impact the quality of your image so I mentioned this in a previous video, if you can, try and resize your images without Resampling, but again, sometimes you come into an image and you have to size him up, right, so you've got to use Resampling. So just be careful with this and, once again, I'm just kind of repeating something I said earlier, there is no silver bullet. It all depends on the kind of image that you have. In any regard, I hope this has given you lots to go on. I've given you a mountain of information and, once again, not a lot of people really understand the Image Size dialog box and they really don't understand how it functions, even people that teach Photoshop don't really understand how it works, so I really wanted to make sure that you have the information and whether you choose to use the information or whether you decide to quickly forget it and move on to the fun things, the fun aspects of Photoshop, that's completely up to you but at least you have the info at your disposal should you need it down the road.
