Photoshop Basics / Exploring the Photoshop Toolbox
Subtitles of the Movie
Next up I'd love to give you a tour of the Photoshop Interface and, of course, there's lots and lots to see inside the Photoshop Interface and I'm going to start off with the Toolbox, which you can see there over on the left-hand side. Now we'll get to that in just a second, but without further ado I think we should actually get an image open inside Photoshop so that we actually have something to look at here inside our application. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to head up to the File Menu and then down to Open. Now if you want you can hit Command-O here on the Mac or Ctrl-O over on the Windows side to open up Photoshop's Open dialog box. What I'd like you to do is head into your Lesson 3 folder and look for a file called Getting Started.jpg. Go ahead and pop him open and he looks like this image here. As I say, I'd like to give you a tour of the Interface and I'm going to start off with the Toolbox here on the left-hand side. As you can see there's all sorts of icons inside the Toolbox here. Now what's interesting to note, though, is if you keep your mouse still over top of one of the tools you'll get what's referred to as a Tool Tip and the Tool Tip will tell you the name of the tool. So I was just on the Red Eye Tool there a moment ago, or for example, here's the Crop Tool or the Eyedropper Tool and so on. You might want to take a moment and just sort of move your mouse over top of some of the Tools here inside Photoshop, kind of get a feel for what you have. Now a lot of these Tools, I'll bet you, won't make a whole lot of sense and a lot of these Tools we'll be using during our time here together, but you know I've got to say this as well, is we're given a huge amount of tools here inside Photoshop. Many of the tools you'll use on a regular basis and you'll get very proficient at using them. Other tools you might use, you know, every once in a while. Some other tools you'll never use at all in the particular work that you do, so don't feel that you have to master every single one of these tools. You kind of get a feel for them and you kind of get a sense of what you're going to use and what you're not going to use, right. So if you wanted to actually turn on a tool or activate a tool all you have to do is single-click on it to choose it there, so there I just selected the Eraser Tool, or the Crop Tool again, or maybe the Hand Tool down at the bottom. So you just single-click on it and that activates it, right. Now you'll notice that some of the tools have a tiny black arrow in their bottom right corners, do you see that in there? Not all of them, just some of them. So what that means is that indicates to us that there are more tools hidden underneath that particular tool. I'm going to use my Crop Tool, for example. So how I access those additional tools is all I do is click and hold with my mouse and I get this Tool fly-out where I can find some additional tools. So, for example, hidden underneath the Crop Tool we have something called the Slice Tool and the Slice Select Tool. And if I wanted to use the Slice Tool, for example, I just hover over top of that guy and let go of my mouse and then it switches me to that tool. So you might want to fiddle around with this. For example, there's all kinds of different tools available to us again, hidden inside the toolbox. There underneath the Clone Stamp Tool we have the Pattern Stamp Tool, for example, right. And again, you might want to take some time and explore through your Toolbox and see what you have available. There's all kinds of stuff hidden inside the Toolbox and lots and lots of tools to explore there. So, hopefully all good. Now the only other thing I think I'll mention here as you fiddle around inside your Toolbox is this. Down at the bottom of the Toolbox we have a color area and inside the color area here we have two color swatches. One color swatch, which is the Foreground Color and the second color swatch, which is the Background Color. Now if you see different colors than I have here try clicking on this guy right here, this little Icon here, that sets the default Foreground and Background Colors. Now you can also just hit the D key on your keyboard, which is a shortcut for setting black as the Foreground and white as your Background. I should also note as well that you can use this little curved, sort of double-headed arrow there, to flip your Foreground and Background colors, which is kind of cool, so just make sure if you want to follow along with me that you have black set to the Foreground and white set to the Background. There you go. That's kind of a quick down and dirty tour of the Photoshop Toolbox.
