Photoshop Basics / Setting Photoshop Preferences pt. 3
Subtitles of the Movie
Next up I've popped open the Transparency and Gamut category here inside Photoshop's Preferences and that'll bring you to this screen. What we have inside Photoshop is what's referred to as Transparency, in other words, areas of our image that contain no pixels at all. It isn't filled with white, it isn't filled with any kind of a background it's filled with nothing, right. And the way that Photoshop indicates that to us by default is by displaying this gray and white checkerboard pattern. Well, inside the Preferences here I can go and change that if I want, so I can go and change my Grid Size if I wish. I can go and change the Grid Colors if I want, as well and I can either do that by using the drop-down that I had just popped open, or by using these two little color swatches or color blocks, if I want, so it's entirely up to you. And then we also have something called the Gamut Warning, when something is what's referred to as out-of-gamut, then we can fill it with a specific color and set an opacity for it as well. I'm going to head down to Units and Rulers. Go ahead and head down to that category as well. Now what we have here inside Photoshop is we have our Ruler Unit of Measurements and normally the default is inches by the way. I've gone and set mine to pixels, so make sure to do the same thing here. We're not working in a print capacity obviously here, so we're not going to be working in inches or millimeters or centimeters, we're going to be working in pixels, so in Web design everything is measured in pixels, so make sure to switch your Ruler Unit of measurement. As far as the Type Unit of measurement goes, just go ahead and leave that set to points, that's just fine here. And you can go and mess around with some of your other settings, as well, the Column Size, the New Document Preset Resolutions and the Point-Pica Size as well. You can certainly adjust that as well. I'm going to head down to Guides, Grid and Slices, or I can go and specify the default color and behaviors for Photoshop Guides and the Grid and the Slices and these are things that we'll talk about in a little while, but there's my Guide Color if I want, the default is Cyan. There's something called Smart Guides inside Photoshop and the default color for those guys is Magenta. And then we have our Grid and you can go and set your Gridlines and your Subdivisions and the Color over there if you like as well and then of course, down at the bottom, we have our Slices. Now we'll be talking about all of these, particularly Slices, in a much larger capacity a little bit later on, so keep these preferences sort of in your back pocket. I'm going to head down to Plug-Ins. If you have any additional Photoshop Plug-Ins you can go and specify your Plug-In Folder here for Photoshop. What a Plug-In is, is essentially a way to expand the capabilities of Photoshop. And then last, but not least, we have our Type, so we have Use Smart Quotes, Enable Missing Glyph Protection and so on and so on. I think we're looking really good here inside Photoshop. Go ahead and click on OK to lock in your Preference changes.
