Photoshop Basics / Setting Photoshop Preferences pt. 1

Subtitles of the Movie

Alright, so are you ready to get started here inside Photoshop? I think probably the best place to begin would be to go about setting up some Preferences, or having a look at some of the Preferences here inside Photoshop. Now I'm inside Photoshop on the Mac. If you're on the Windows side then what I'll be doing throughout our time here together is I'll make sure to mention the Windows side keyboard shortcuts and the Windows side equivalents and so on. So, to go about getting into our Preferences, if you're on the Windows side, head to your Edit Menu and then look for Preferences. Here on the Mac side I'm going to head up to the Photoshop Menu up in the top right corner and then down to Preferences and then go ahead and choose General. And, by the way, there's a great keyboard shortcut to remember if you're going to be coming into your Preferences every once in a while: Command-K here on the Mac, or Ctrl-K over on the Windows side. So go ahead and choose Photoshop Preferences and then General, or Edit Preferences and then General, if you're on the Windows side. And your Preferences dialog box should show up. Now make sure over on the left-hand side that you are, indeed, on your General Preferences and as you can see going down the left-hand side we have a whole laundry list of all the different Preference Categories that we have here. Now what I want to make sure of is that inside our General Preferences that our Color Picker is set to Adobe, not Apple here on the Mac side, or anything else, just Adobe and if you haven't worked with the Photoshop Color Picker before you'll see how this works. The other thing that I want to make sure of as well is that our Image Interpolation method is set to Bicubic, best for smooth gradients and if you're not sure what that is, this is also referred to the Resampling Method here inside Photoshop. If you're not sure what this is, hang in there. We'll definitely talk about resizing images and these resampling methods, or these interpolation methods. So again, just make sure you're set to Bicubic, best for smooth gradients. The other thing that I want to do as well is I want to make sure that Resize Image During Paste/Place is checked, so make sure that that guy's turned On. The other thing that I want to make sure of is that Zoom Resizes Windows is turned Off. I'm going to uncheck that guy. Now that's a personal choice. When you zoom in and zoom out on your images the Photoshop Document Window will actually resize on you and I don't like that. I'm going to make sure that mine's turned Off. And Zoom with Scroll Wheel, I'm going to make sure that that guy's turned On and you'll see how that guy plays out as well. The next thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to head down to the Interface category. Go ahead and click on Interface. Now what you can do here is, if you want, you can go and specify some colors and some borders for the different Screen Modes here inside Photoshop, so the Standard Screen Mode, gray with the Drop Shadow, Full Screen with Menus: Gray and the Drop Shadow and then the Full Screen there, Black and None. You can go and change those if you want. I'm going to leave the defaults here. The other thing you can do as well is when you're working inside your Channels Palette you can view them in color if you wish. I'm going to go ahead and turn mine on. Show Menu Colors, so you can actually highlight Menu Commands inside your Photoshop Menus. I'm going to make sure that's turned On. And I also want to make sure that my Tooltips are turned On as well. The other thing that I want to make sure of, down inside Panels and Documents, is Auto-Show Panels is turned On as well as Remember Panel Locations and I'm going to make sure that Open Documents as Tabs, I'm going to make sure that that's unchecked. OK, great.
