Using Bridge / Filtering & Sorting
Subtitles of the Movie
In another movie I showed you how to rate and label your images and briefly showed that you can view just the rejected images. That's the first step to being able to organize your images. But it's quite possible that you want to see just the images that meet certain criteria, whether it be a star rating, a label or other criteria. Bridge CS4 has made it very easy to sort and filter your images. Sorting means that the images are displayed in groups according to certain criteria and it's possible to have multiple groups of images. For example, you might sort by file name, type, date created, date modified, et cetera; any of these different options here. If we were to sort these images by type, then all my TIF images will be together and all my JPEG images will be together, whereas before they were scattered and mixed. You can also change the order, whether it's ascending or descending so if you wanted to see the TIFs first, you could simply change the sort order. Sometimes you're really only concerned with images that meet certain specifications; for example, perhaps all your five-star images. In that case you want to filter the display. To filter by a star rating, you can click on the Star Icon and opt to show just the rejected images, one, two, three, four or five-star. If I click on five-star images, then just these images that have five stars are visible right now. But come over here into my Filter Window. You can see these things more clearly. If the Filter Panel isn't showing, then go up to Window and toggle it on. Right now you'll notice that Ratings, Five-Star is checked and so only the four images, it tells me right here that I have four, that have five stars are showing. Now, there are three more images that have four stars and if I check over here, now both the four-star and the five-star images are showing. Similarly, I can add the three-star images. If I decide I really don't want to filter by my star ratings, then I click again and all the images are visible. When you choose more than one category within a certain area, then you're saying if the image has three stars or four stars or five stars, I want to see it. Or if we were looking in file types, if the image is a JPEG or a TIF, I want to see it. But if you are choosing criteria in more than one area, for example ratings and file types, you're saying that the images must be either a TIF or a JPEG and they must have five, four or three stars. If I uncheck the JPEG option here, now I'm saying that the images that are displayed must be TIF images and they must be TIFS that have five, four or three. The JPEGs will no longer be displayed. So you have to do a little thinking about whether you're saying criteria A and criteria B so that you're limiting which images are showing up. Those images aren't being deleted. They're just not visible to you at that moment so that they're not confusing you. When you want to see all your images again, uncheck the various options and all your images are visible again. In terms of filtering, there are a lot of filters you can choose; labels, ratings, file types, ISO speed ratings, et cetera. It's up to you for whatever category might be useful to you. I just displayed them from the icon over here but if I use my Scrollbar, you'll see that they're all visible over here as well and any that are applicable are automatically expanded. Using the filters and sorting are quick ways of limiting your options and seeing only images that meet the qualifications that you're after and that can be a huge timesaver. But don't forget to toggle off the filters when you want to access all the images in the folder.
