Using Bridge / Bridge Preferences pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

In Keyword Preferences, I check the first and third options. If you'd rather apply single keywords, then leave the first box unchecked, in which case then you have the option to write hierarchical keywords. We'll talk more about keywords in another movie. In the Labels Preferences, I uncheck the box that would require the Command Key to apply labels and ratings. I'm much happier just pressing a number key in order to apply a label or a rating. By default, the fields down here may be filled in with different words than what you're seeing on my screen. You can customize them to whatever you would like that color label to mean. But if you change those meanings for another project and then you view an older folder, all of the labels in that older folder will turn white. For me, that is completely annoying and for that reason I don't assign meaningful text to these boxes. You have to have something there or you can't use the color labels with the number keys. I just call the red one Red, yellow, Yellow, green, Green and blue, Blue. Leave the File Type Associations at their default values but if you suddenly notice that a certain file type won't open in Photoshop, check here to make sure that another program hasn't suddenly taken over the automatic function. For example, here's my Cannon Camera Raw and it's set to Adobe Photoshop CS4. But there are other programs that might open it as well. In the Cache Preferences, there are some debates about the options. First you can choose whether or not to keep hundred-percent previews in cache and I generally don't because it takes up more memory and I generally don't need the hundred-percent previews. If you regularly copy folders from Bridge onto a CD or DVD, you may want to check the option to Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible. Otherwise your edits won't come with you unless you remember to export the cache specifically before you burn the DVD. The thing is the cache may not work as smoothly and quickly when it's stored in folders so that Adobe actually recommends that by default you leave this unchecked for maximum performance. Leave the Location at its default setting unless you have a good reason to store the cache elsewhere. I leave the cache at its default value because it's a good compromise between performance and memory demands. From time to time you may want to click the Compact Cache option to improve performance and if Bridge suddenly isn't displaying images correctly in a folder, you may need to purge the cache. It's pretty rare these days but occasionally does happen. If it does happen and you purge the cache, then Bridge will have to regenerate the thumbnails which will take a bit of time. Uncheck all the startup scripts that you don't need in order to have Bridge boot up faster and get to work displaying your images. For example, I'm going to uncheck Adobe Illustrator, Startup Scripts and InDesign Startup Scripts. I leave the Advanced and Output Preferences at their default settings. Overall, taking the time to go through and set these options will make Bridge behave more efficiently for you.
