Next we're going to work on her mouth. There are a lot of ways to subtly whiten teeth, but one that works well is a similar method to what we used on her eyes. I'll click back on the Background Layer and use my Quick Select Tool to make a selection of her mouth. Then I'll put that on its own layer, Layer, New, Layer via Copy. I'll double-click on the text so that I know exactly what I was working on in this layer if I want to make any changes later on. Next, I'm going to come back to the Dodge Tool, let's zoom in to her mouth, and I'm going to set it down a little bit to about 10 percent, and I'll set it again to work on the Midtones and I'll go over her teeth. When you zoom in can be misleading as to how far you should go. So I'll go one more time with it, so that we've done about 20 percent. Now to me that's a little bit too strong, so I'll reduce the Opacity of the layer to get a little bit more natural looking result. If her lips were not already pink enough I could add a Hue-Saturation Layer, clip it to this Layer and slightly increase the Saturation of her lips. The next thing we need to deal with are skin imperfections. Let's begin by making a new layer and we'll call it Skin, and then we'll zoom in and use the Healing Brush to remove any obvious imperfections that are temporary. If someone had a mole you would leave that because if you removed it they wouldn't look like themselves. It would look like, well, where is so-and-so's mole? We're just going to remove quickly some of the temporary skin imperfections. Now you can use the Healing Brush to remove wrinkles but when you do I advise that you do it on a separate layer that you can reduce the Opacity because you never want to entirely remove wrinkles. In this case we're going to do it a slightly different way. And we've removed the more obvious imperfections and now we want to just smooth out the rest of her skin. This is one of the most common places where people go overboard and create images with very plastic looking skin. We're going to start by creating a Merge Visible Layer. We'll have the topmost layer selected, hold down the Alt or Option key, and come over here to the fly-out menu and choose Merge Visible. If I let go too soon I'll flatten the image. If that happens, hit Command- or Ctrl-Z and try again. This time when you do it, make sure to hold down Alt or Option until you see that new layer appear because you want to make sure that you have all your layers in case you change your mind later. Convert the layer so that you can use a Smart Filter on it, and then go to Blur, Surface Blur. You're going to use a small amount here for both settings. You don't want to go overboard and create plastic air-brushed skin. You're not trying to do a magazine cover most likely, you're trying to do a picture that just looks a little bit better than the person normally looks and click OK. Before, after. Just a little bit. Click on the Smart Filter Mask, choose your Brush Tool, have black as your Foreground color set to 100 percent, and then go over the areas that should be completely sharp, such as her eyes, and eyebrows. Often a little area just under the nose, and her teeth and lips, also her earrings, and we'll zoom out and quickly bring back the detail in her hair, zipper, and necklace. You can always readjust the Blur settings if you need to after you've worked on the Mask. I think that she's looking pretty good now.
