Introduction / New in CS4 pt. 1
Subtitles of the Movie
When any software program is updated, the obvious questions include what have they changed and is it worth it to spend the money to upgrade? I'm going to mention some of the major changes in CS4 that affect photographers. Most of them will be showcased in upcoming movies, but I'll demonstrate a few of them here. First and foremost to me is Camera Raw 5.0 and yes, in Photoshop CS4 it's Camera Raw 5. It's a huge advance and includes the adjustment brush and graduated filter tools. These enable you to edit individual regions of your image, changing the exposure, brightness, the contrast, saturation, clarity, sharpness and or color without having to first create a selection. We can opt to have Camera Raw auto mask and it does an impressive job of determining the boundaries of where to apply the effect, or you can paint the effect on wherever you choose. Let me show you an example. I'll begin by clicking one of the presets, the saturation set at 25 and I'll begin to go over the water and I'll roughly go around the penguin, over here, between the penguins, et cetera. It's a little hard to tell if I've missed an area, so I'll show the mask and yes, indeed, I did miss a few areas. I'm going to make my brush just a little bit smaller, I'll come along here and I'm going to go over adding to my selection that Camera Raw is making for me. But you can see that I've missed a few areas so I'll click Erase and go over those areas where I missed, meaning that I went a little too far. Now I'll turn off the mask. Now, that saturation change didn't make a lot of difference and I wish that I had made it stronger. So I'll simply adjust the slider to make it stronger or I could make it weaker. In addition, I can add additional effects to it, all without having to repaint over the area. This addition alone will save you enormous amounts of time as you edit your images and there's, of course, the issue that if you buy a new camera you'll have to upgrade to CS4 because Adobe adds new camera support only to the most recent versions of Camera Raw. Camera Raw also has a new targeted adjustment tool. It makes it easier to make some types of adjustments.
