The Marquee Tools are some of the oldest and most basic selection tools in Photoshop and are available from this icon in the Toolbox. There are actually two Marquee Tools that are of interest to photographers, the Rectangular Marquee Tool and the Elliptical Marquee. The Single Row and Column Tools are not of much use to us. I'm going to use this photo of some eggs to demonstrate the various selection tools in a series of movies. You'll soon see that some selection tools are better suited for some jobs than others. To use the Rectangular Marquee Tool, begin by selecting it and then click and drag out the area you want to select. You can make a wide rectangle, a tall thin one, you can make a square, whatever shape you need that's rectangular. If you hold down the Spacebar, you can reposition that rectangle. Once you let go of the left click, you can no longer change the shape of the selection. Let me go back to the New Selection Tool. If I click in the center of my selection and drag, I can reposition it but I can't reshape it. I'm going to move the selection up here a little bit and I'm going to come over here and select my Elliptical Marquee Tool. Now, notice that I'm on New Selection so when I click and drag, my other selection disappears. If I had been on Add to Selection, it would not have disappeared. Similar to the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I can shape a wide, skinny elliptical shape, a tall skinny one, a circular one, whatever I want. Holding down the Spacebar it'll ask me to reposition it and I can drag it out. Notice that I can't get an egg shape precisely. I can get close but I can't get exact. Again, once I let go I can't reshape I but by clicking in the center of it, I could move it around to reposition it. Just make sure that you're on the New Selection Icon up here when you click in the center of your selection to mov it. If I wanted to add to that selection with a rectangular marquee, I would click on the Add to Selection Icon, draw out my selection and now notice we have a combination shape. If I come back over here to New Selection, I can reposition that shape as well. The Marquee Tools are most helpful with geometric shapes such as some buildings, but overall are not as commonly used by photographers as the other selection methods, although you may find the Elliptical Marquee Tool helpful when selecting eyes. Other selection tools tend to be a bit more flexible. We'll look at some of the other tools that'll be much easier to use to select these eggs.
