One of the huge advances to Camera Raw CS4 is the ability to do localized adjustments. If you click on the Adjustment Brush or the Graduated Filter, you get a new window over here that allows you to create a brush in which you paint on whatever changes you want to a specific area of the image. For example, if I want to increase saturation a little bit more in the water area, I'm going to have it Auto Mask and you can see my brush is a little bit large. I'll use my Bracket Keys to make it a little bit smaller and I'll come over here and go across. Now, click Show Mask and you can see where I went. And I've missed a few areas so I'm going to fill them in and you can see that I've gone little too far in some areas as well but that overall, Camera Raw is doing a great job of masking it for me. So I'll come back over here to the Erase and of course, if I were working zoomed in and with a slightly smaller brush, this would be even easier. I'll get the effect off of Josh's hair. Now, one of the really nice things about this is that although I've adjusted the saturation, I can change my mind and I can increase that or decrease it. I can add an effect, can add clarity to it, I could add contrast to it, change the exposure making it much darker, much lighter, et cetera. So in effect, I'm altering exactly what it is that I painted on, the adjustment that I've painted on. This is huge because it's a major timesaver. You are not having to create layer masks and make selections in Photoshop as you used to do in order to make localized adjustments. This is probably going to be one of your favorite additions to using CS4. The Graduated Filter is very similar except it applies the changes as a gradient that you control. There are many other tools in Camera Raw, including sharpening, straightening, cropping, red eye reduction, chromatic aberration and vignetting controls and more. Again, I strongly encourage you to take a look at my Adobe Camera Raw MasterClass!, available from www.VTC.com. In that series I go into depth about each and every feature in Camera Raw so that you can use it to its full advantage. Using Camera Raw to its fullest can save you a lot of time in Photoshop.
