Arbitrary Rotation is when you take the Ruler Tool and you measure an angle in an image so that you can apply it to another image so that it matches the angle that you need it to be set on. For example, let's say that a client gave me the word Time which I've already rotated. Let me undo it. And we want the word Time to go at this exact angle on the W. Now, of course, most artists would eyeball it. So you'd bring that logo in and then you would eyeball it and rotate it yourself. But I'm going to show you how to use the Ruler, which lives normally under the Eyedropper Tool to use a little bit of precise measurement to do the same task. So once again, I'm going to go to the Eyedropper, hold the mouse down, grab my Ruler Tool and I'm going to click and drag with the Ruler along the W like so. This is the exact angle that the client tells me he wants the logo to follow. So I'm going to go to the Image Menu and I'm going to go to Image Rotation, Arbitrary, to see the number that Photoshop has measured for that angle. It tells me that this line is at 34.99 degrees. So I'm going to select Counter Clockwise when I rotate the other object because I don't want it to go this way. I want to rotate this way. So I'm going to copy this value by pressing Command or Control C. Now I'm going to go to my other image, which is the word Time and as you see here, it's on its own layer. I'm going to go to Image, Image Rotation, Arbitrary and I'm going to paste that value. Now I'm going to select Counter Clockwise and select OK. Now the word Time is the exact same angle that was measured by the Ruler. So what I'm going to do at this point is I'm going to grab the word Time and I'm going to click and drag it to the other tab and then I'll let go anywhere because I can move it later on. So I'll let go and then I'll move it into position and I'll press Command or Control T if I want to rescale it. Now, sometimes, by the way that will mess the angle up but once again, the client just wants it to sit on that word and there you have it. So Arbitrary Rotation is going to be great when you can't quite figure out the angle you need to put a word alongside a road or across a truck or anything that has a specific angle that you or a client definitely needs to have for one element to fit precisely on a part of your image.
