The ability to align layers automatically is great for occasions when you need to take a group of pictures and in one picture, if someone is in the exact perfect position, but their eyes are closed. So, if you have like 20 people in the image you take the picture again and then the person's eyes are open, but their head is in a slightly different position, what you can do is take those two different images and bring them into Photoshop and put them on their own layer as I have here with these plants, and what you could do is align these automatically so that they're pretty much as close to possible as far as the composition, but then you can use a Mask to paint away what you don't want to see. So, let's take a look at this image here. Take a look at this red leaf. It looks much better to me in the one beneath it, but the thing is I want to have the table in the image and I don't get it in this image that's nice and clean, and I also like the arrangement of some of the other leaves as far as how sharp they are. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to Shift Select both of these layers and I'm going to go to Edit, Auto Align Layers. The dialog box appears asking me how I'd like this operation to proceed. Typically I keep it on Auto but you can choose Perspective if you want, Collage, Cylindrical, and many of the other options. If you have any problems or distortion with your lens, you can use Lens Correction to remove a vignette, or any geometric distortion. So what I'm going to do is leave it on Auto because well, it's plants, and I really don't need to do too much more to it than paint a Mask. So I'm going to say OK, and in a moment the images are both moved over so that when I hide one and show the other they're pretty much in the same exact space. I'm going to Undo this and show you how it used to be. One was pretty far down and the other was pretty high up. Now they're right on top of each other. So on this layer I'm going to add a Layer Mask down here and I'm going to grab my brush and what I could do is go to that leaf and I'm going to paint away the leaf in this image to reveal the one that's underneath it, the one I like. That just gives you an example of how you can use that tool. Now of course that was a little sloppy on the end here, but you get the idea. I'm actually painting away the leaf on this layer so I can see the one underneath on this layer. And I'll go ahead and just do a very wide brush stroke here so you can see what's happening. Now I'm combining both of these images together. That's the beautiful thing about a Layer Mask and using the Auto Align feature. It allows you to paint away that person's eyes who were closed, and then you can open up the eyes by revealing the layer underneath.
