Now you've heard me discuss the use of split density filters in landscape photography so now let's take a closer look at why that's a good thing and we look at this image and we see a very, bright cloud pattern here and as we look at the histogram we see that indeed were not clipping anything but were nearly so and yes we can put it into Photoshop and bring out the detail but why make all that work for yourself when all you have to do is reach in your camera bag, pull out a one or a two or three stop split density filter and balance things out very easily as in this image and look at the improvement in the detail in the clouds, its very good, nothing else was changed in this image except putting a split density filter over the lens and from here it's a very simple matter to reach up, grab the Curves Dialog Box, bump your brightness a little bit or if you want to do it the other way we can do it this way to, we can bring it up like this and it looks pretty good, from an exposure stand point. So get some split density filters they really, really will help your results in landscape photography.
