Introduction / WARNING - Installing CS3 Over a Beta

Subtitles of the Movie

Never has an update been burdened with so many problems than Photoshop CS3. More than likely you already have CS3 installed and everything is working fine, but on the off chance that you have not installed the final version yet and you have the beta still on your machine, you are well advised to pay attention to this section if you want to avoid extreme frustrations and technical disasters. Now, my own experience is as follows. I downloaded the beta in December of 2006, installed it and used it as most everyone did. When the final version came out, I was one of the first to download the new CS3 and immediately installed it over the beta. Bad mistake. Bridge crashed on a regular basis only seconds after loading it. Photoshop did the same but not as bad. Other users were having the same problem on both Macs and PCs, so Adobe posted a fix for the problem by offering step-by-step instructions to uninstall the final, delete the beta, then reinstall the final. That sounds rather straightforward. Right? So that's what I did. And this also did not work. So finally, after weeks of frustration, Adobe releases a script that removes the beta from the registry. Meanwhile, after weeks of tweaking my machine to correct the problems, I ended up having to buy two new hard drives, do a clean install of Windows and then reinstall all of my drivers and software. So finally, after the expense of essentially rebuilding my computer and the time it took to affect all of this, I have a version of CS3 that works reliably. And the moral of the story is that you must use the beta removal script before installing the final version. Much has been learned and you should not experience the horror that I did. Now, don't get me wrong. Adobe is a wonderful company. They produce marvelous software. It produces amazing results over a number of different graphic and video, audio and web development disciplines. Now, here's how to access the script. Go to the main Adobe website, run your cursor over support. You will see a drop-down menu. Choose support home, click on that and it'll take you to a page that has a variety of their products listed out there. You click on Photoshop obviously. That comes up. You'll scroll down to the approximate area that is the middle of the page and you'll find a link that says remove Photoshop CS3 public beta. Click on that and it will take you to the page that offers you detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to remove the beta version with the script. Now, I'd like to direct your attention to this warm and fuzzy warning that you had better pay heed to because if you don't, your going to run into major, major disaster. It says before running the CS3 clean script, it is critical that you backup your hard drive including all data, content and applications. Failure to do so and failure to follow the instructions included with the script could result in the loss of the contents of your hard drive. Now, I'm here to tell you that it is true. Now, you must follow the instructions for removing the beta version with the removal script. This is absolutely essential.
