Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers Tutorials

Introduction / Welcome

Subtitles of the Movie

Hello and welcome to VTC's tutorial Photoshop CS3 for Photographers. My name is Phil Hawkins and I've been a professional photographer in Fresno, California for 28 years. I shoot landscape, weddings, sports, portraits and some architecture and I've been using Photoshop on a daily basis for ten years, all the way back to Version 5.0. Photoshop CS3 is a quantum-leap improvement for photographers over previous versions with many new features such as the new and improved bridge, Camera Raw, the black and white conversion utility is brand new and there are many, many more features. And it's really gotten to the point in digital photography that Photoshop has become an indispensible part of the photograph industry and your personal work flow. And for that reason, it's almost impossible to have any discussion of photography without also discussing Photoshop. Subsequently, our tutorial will be as much about digital photography as it is about Photoshop because getting the most out of Photoshop requires you to establish habits and a work flow in the field that begins when you take your camera out of your travel case. Now, please do not thing, especially if you're new to Photoshop that you can go around and shoot carelessly, assuming that Photoshop will take care of any mistakes later. Once in a great while that is true but more often than not, it's garbage in, garbage out because being skilled on Photoshop does not relieve you from being diligent and skilled in the field when you're taking photos. Now, we're going to discuss camera settings and advanced DSLRs and the general direction we will take will be in addressing the issues facing working professionals. But we will also touch on the limitations of point-and-shoot cameras, lighting, sensor noise, white balance and many other subjects pertaining to digital photography and Photoshop. We'll take you step by step through the theories of masking. You'll learn all about layers, black and white conversion, sharpening, color adjustments, vignetting, stitching, which is building panoramas from multiple images, how to apply text, build watermarks and copyright labels. Now, the tutorial is organized to be a resource upon which you can refer when you have questions about a specific Photoshop function and also it's a learning tool to apply new procedures for such things as skin treatments in portraiture, leveling images, balancing dynamic range, cropping and many other subjects. Now, there's one thing to keep in mind. Although I am an expert in Photoshop, I do not know everything there is to know about it. No one knows everything about Photoshop. It's just too big and encompassing for any one person to know it all. And with that in mind, you should be aware that there is no one way to do anything in Photoshop. I'll give you procedures to follow and they'll give you excellent results but I encourage you to take what I give you and experiment. Develop your own ideas and results because much of what I am about to impart is the result of my own experimentation and if you get that eureka moment at some point in the future, share your results on the various discussion boards that exist on portrait photography, Photoshop and general digital photography. So let's get started. Now, don't forget; any time you did not grasp something I have mentioned, you can use the slider at the bottom of the screen to back up and replay a portion. Also, I encourage you to open Photoshop CS3, follow along with your own images and stop the tutorial to explore and investigate any aspect or procedure in progress. Well, are you ready? Well, alright. Let's go.
