When converting a portrait from color to black and white, the situation is slightly different. You have a number of different considerations to keep in mind and we first look at those again by accessing the black and white conversion utility and as we see, you get a rather mundane, drab conversion to black and white as it stands. But if we go up here like we did before, pull out the high-contrast red filter and we see a little bit of a high-key effect, which is a little better. It brings out the detail and separates the skin from the hair a little bEtter and it just looks better, but I think there's a whole lot more that we can do on this image. So let me show you how before you make the black and white conversion there are things you can do with the image to enhance the result that you get when you make your conversion. We start as we always do making our copy layers and we take the top layer and we make adjustments in the color. We go to Color Balance and we add yellow, we balance it out, take some of the green out and maybe add just a little bit of red. So as we look at this in color, it's grossly out of Color Balance. But look what happens when we take that out of Color Balance color image and convert it to black and white. And we invoke the high-contrast red filter and now we have something to begin with that we can add contrast to and different kinds of skin softening elements to go forward. So if we take our middle layer and we make no conversion adjustments whatsoever in the color and we go to the high-contrast red filter without making any further adjustments whatsoever, we can see the difference. This is the non-adjusted color and this is the adjusted color. So you can see that what you do when the image is in its color state effects the result that you get when you make the black and white conversion. Now, we're going to leave you at this point with this discussion and pick it up when we start working on portraits because the things that we can do with this from this point forward are more centered on how to manipulate portraits in a general sense.
