Subtitles of the Movie (Adobe Photoshop CS3 / Web Preparation / The Slice Tool)

There are many packages specifically designed to create websites but Photoshop can also help you to create websites as well by allowing you to take an image such as this and slicing it into little parts or little pieces and then you can program those individual pieces or slices to go to certain web pages. So we're gonna spend some time talking about exactly how to do just that. Now before we keep going I wanna make sure you guys have your rulers out and if you don't see your rulers go to the view menu and choose rulers because we're gonna do slices with two techniques. We're gonna slice based on guides and we're gonna slice based on our own judgment and our own manually slicing of this image. Now as you see here we have this image and these gentlemen are carrying briefcases. Now let's imagine for a second that I want to advertise these briefcases and have people click on each case to get a price and find out more about that case. Well we're gonna slice this image up to do just that. So I'm gonna zoom out just a little bit and show you that we have this tool right here and if you hold your mouse down you see we have a slice tool and underneath it we have a slice select tool. Now with the slice tool we're gonna cut this image up and then we're we'll be able to individually select slices and give them parameters and program them using this tool. So let's go ahead and first off start it with this guy here. So what I'm gonna do with the slice tool is I'm gonna manually select one of these 00:01:15] briefcases for example this one. Now I'm gonna draw a boundary just like you would with any marquee tool and I'm gonna let go of the mouse and watch what Photoshop's going to do. It will put this particular piece of artwork in its own boundary and will also divide the rest of the image up so that everything's nice and neat. For example, we have slice one, slice two, three, four and five because Photoshop just can't give you a slice in the middle it has to look at the whole image, analyze it and slice it up so that you can get the slice you want. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm going to once again cut my own slice out and I'm gonna move mouse so that the boundary lock on to both the top of the other slice as well as the left side of the slice I'm cutting in now and if you wanna make sure you have a snap going go to the view menu and choose snap, so that when you draw your slices they will automatically try to lock on to the guides. I'm gonna draw one more slice right here and as you see it's locking on, I'm gonna let go of the mouse and now I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven slices. The slices that you see in blue are the ones that the user or in this case me, I created those and Photoshop created the ones that are in gray. Now so let's go ahead and talk about how to create slices based on guides this time. So we manually created those but I'm going to now choose to pull down the guides which is why I asked you to take the ruler out. So I'm gonna grab a ruler, I'm once again clicking inside the ruler, I'm gonna pull down a guide and let's say we wanna talk about the guys shoes this time so I'm gonna pull down a guide right here and I'll pull another one out like so here and I'm gonna draw a guide so this ones separate I'm gonna draw a guide so that these shoes are separate and these and this one automatically because its guides here is gonna have its own block. Now the interesting thing is when I click back on the slice tool this button is now illuminated, slices from guides. It's going to over ride the slices we created earlier so pretty much you have two choices you can create slices from guides or you can cut it up yourself using the slice tool. So having said that I created these new slices and I'm gonna click this button here and now Photoshop is going to divide the image up and provide me with the slices here and as you see slices from guides gives me blue everywhere because I in effect created the locations of the guides. So we have all these slices here. Let me go ahead and choose this other tool to show you we have a slice and when you click on it the boundary changes so you can now manipulate it. So just to reiterate a slice is simply a way for you to cut an image up into little chunks and when we export this Photoshop is smart enough to realize where each slice is in relationship to the other and it will bring this image back into a full piece of artwork although it will be cut up but it will arrange it using HTML code. Now HTML stand for hyper text make up language and Photoshop is gonna write that code for you automatically so that it knows how to reassemble this image in your favorite web package. What can you do with slices? You can cut an image up and what you can do in effect once we get to the next part is program each piece if you want to or certain pieces to create what's known as an image map. An image map is simply a photograph such as this that has individual components that can be programmed to act as buttons for web navigation.
