The marquee tools also give you the ability to add a stroke or an outline around them which can give you some more control over showing specific regions or providing special effects as well. As you see here I'm going to grab my marquee tool. I'm going to just grab the elliptical marquee tool for now and I also wanna show you a little short cut for creating a perfect circle but from drawing it from the inside out instead of clicking and dragging like so to create a marquee what you can do is hold the shift key and at the same time hold down either the alt or option keys and click and drag and you're gonna draw from the center outward like that. So that's one way you can really draw a marquee to whatever size you need while keeping your eye on whatever you're trying to select. So saying that I'm going to zoom in on the moon here and once that gets there I'm going to draw a marquee to try to grab the entire moon using the shift and the alt option method. So I'm going to put my mouse right about the center like so and I'm going to draw a selection to try to grab the outline and of course the moon itself is a little oblong so I'm going to just put that right where I think it goes. It's a little uneven on purpose and now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go to my edit menu and I'm gonna choose this command here, stroke. Now what the stroke command will do for you is it will give you the ability to stroke the outline of your shape with the color you choose. So what you can do is decide the width of the stroke and for this instance I wanna show you really how this looks so I'm gonna make this a pretty large number like 20 and I'm gonna click here on the swatch to choose a color. So I'll go ahead and grab a very bright blue and what I can decide as well is where the stroke is going to occur, for example, I can have the stroke start on the inside of the shape and go outwards 20 pixels which is what inside will do. I can also choose to have the pixels go from the center which is this line here so that'll be 10 pixels inside and ten pixels outside and I can also choose outside which will give me my 20 pixels completely from this line all the way out. So I'm gonna choose center for now and I can also choose a blending mode and of course you have a billion blending modes to choose from. So I'm going to go ahead and grab, let's see here, something crazy like uh hard light and I'm going to leave the opacity at a hundred percent and I'll click OK. And now I have this gigantic stroke around my shape. Now once again what you can do with that is you can then decide what you want to do that and you can refine that edge, you can you know make it larger and then you can apply a blur to it or whatever you want to. But for now I'm going to manually deselect this and we're gonna draw yet another shape. I'm gonna draw another ellipse and I'm going to put a blur and I'm gonna go a little further outside like this and I'm gonna go to filter and I'm gonna choose blur and we'll put a Gaussian blur in there and as you see we're able to create a very nice glow for the moon by using a stroke. It's a nice way to get a little sheet of a gradient going to. So you know even thought we blended into this part of the image I just want to demonstrate what that will do for you if you decide to put a stroke on a shape. So once again you can choose to use any of the marquee tools here and then use any color you'd like and decide how the stroke is going to occur, whether its gonna be on the inside of the stroke, the outside or on the center of the stroke itself. And once you have that you're gonna apply whatever special effect you like to blend the two together.
