The portable document format also known as PDF was supposed to take our world away from paper and make us a paperless society. But if you're like me and you order online magazines that are PDFs you print them out anyway. I don't like to read things on the screen. So let's go ahead and talk about what a PDF can do for you. A PDF will allow you to take a file like this, with all of the text and everything that you have designed and send it to someone who doesn't have Photoshop so they can see your artwork. Of course you could do the same thing by creating a JPEG or a TIF but they would also have to have some kind of application to open one of those file formats. Normally though a JPEG can be seen in an email so I just want to let you know that as well. So what I'm gonna do with this document in particular since there are so many layers and I really want to uh embed all my fonts and everything into this document I'm going to go to the drop down arrow here and I'm gonna choose flatten image. And I'm gonna discard all my hidden layers and now I have one flat file. Now I'm gonna go to file and I'm gonna choose save as, and as you see with my desktop I already did this earlier because it took a little while to convert so I want to save you some time and just show you these steps that I took to get there. So I'm gonna save this as PDF two alright. Now I'm gonna choose from my format list Photoshop PDF which is once again portable document format I'll click save and then in a moment I'll be presented with anther dialog box and another one and here are the options that you can choose from, normally I don't change anything because I'm pretty happy with the way the application works completely by itself. But there are some presets you can choose from, from high quality to smaller size. You can also change the compatibility with earlier versions of uh Acrobat. So if the person you're sending this to doesn't have Acrobat 8 or anything newer you can just find out what they have and make it compatible for them. You can also choose some of these options here to preserve the Photoshop editing capabilities to impage thumbnails and also if you're gonna go online with this you can optimize the file for fast web preview. You can also choose a compression scheme for your images. So you can have image quality set to maximum, minimum and medium if you'd like to and you can also down sample for images that are above this size to this size. You can also choose an ou, output conversion if you like, so you can choose no conversion or you can choose a color space and what you can do as well is as I mentioned you can put a password on the document as well. So if I click here I can put a password that someone has to have to open this file. So I'll type hunter, and then I can also have a password to restrict people from printing and editing this document and I get that once in a while. A client will send me a file and they can't even print it because they went to far and put a password on everything. Last but not least I can see a summary that shows me all the settings that I choose and if I like this I can save this preset if I change a lot of things here. So I can see that I have high quality, I have it compatible for Acrobat 8, I have all the compatibilities on as far as the Photoshop editing, I have down sampling on, I have compression maximum for my images as far as the quality is concerned and I also have security on for the document open but I don't have it on for it to print. So what I can do now is save this PDF and as I said earlier I already did this on my desktop. So I'm gonna show you what this looks like. I'm gonna open up a program called preview which is on the Macintosh and this is the file. So they can see what your work looks like and uh once the password protection has been entered they can open your file and they can print it out and make comments if they like to by calling your phone and once again they don't have to have Photoshop to be able to see your files.
