We talked about quite a few of the selection tools available to you when it comes to making a mask. What we can also do is have a more organic method and that's called quick mask mode and this is really for people who really want to have more control over painting a mask manually with a brush. It's also a great mode to use when you want to create something very organic and soft. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna zoom in on these clouds here. Alright so I have these clouds and let's say I really want to paint a nice mask around this. Now what I could normally do of course is I can use my lasso tool and I can try to take my time and try to create a nice selection around these clouds and I'm using a Wacom tablet so it's not so difficult to do. But I want to instead of using a lasso tool, paint, So once again I'm gonna show you something. I'm gonna grab my brush and we're gonna click this button right here which is quick mask mode and what happens is when you choose quick mask mode and you start to paint, first of all let me go ahead reduce that brush cause that's quite large for this uh particular instance. So I'm gonna hit my left bracket key and I'm gonna try to find a reasonable size which I think that might be. What I could do is start to paint and what you see here is red as opposed to black because we're actually painting the mask and I'm gonna tell you in a second how you can change the options of this tool. Once again I'm simply painting and I'm using my uh my tablet and I'm just taking my time and I'm painting this uh cloud and as you see it's uh very easy to do. I'm painting in the regions I want to protect or I can inverse this selection at any time. So let me go ahead and finish painting this and let's say by the way that I made a mistake. Let's say that I painted way too much like this well I'm gonna hit x on the keyboard and when I paint with white I'm able to paint away portions of that mask to get the selection exactly the way I want it and once I'm done all I have to do is exit quick mask mode and you'll notice here when I put my mouse over this icon and I let my mouse hover there we see the keyboard short cut is Q. So I can hit Q to enter and exit quick mask mode and when I exit you see I have a nice selection here. So now I can use this as a mask, I can paint over it, I can do whatever I want to. So I can grab my brush tool and I can choose a color and I'll just show you that this is an actual masked area. So I'm not able to touch this at all. I'm gonna undo that and show you that if I go to select inverse then I've changed how that's working and I can paint inside that mask now. So I'm gonna undo that, go back to select inverse and show you something else here I'm gonna double click on the quick mask icon and you see that now what I can do when I paint is I could paint the masked areas or I could paint the selected areas which is kinda cool so if I choose selected area and I paint now everything is inverse. So I'm actually painting with a different color. So I can once again hit x to add or subtract from that mask. How cool is that. Also what I can do is I can double click again and I can change the color of the mask. So if I don't wanna see red and I wanna see blue instead I can choose blue and now when I paint with quick mask mode I'm painting with blue so that might be a little easier on the eyes. What I can also do is change the opacity of this color when I m painting, so I can make it 95 percent for example. Go to quick mask mode and I see less of the image behind it which is not really useful. So I'll double click again, drop this back down to 50, and when I paint once again let me go to quick mask mode. I can see the area behind the image. So quick mask mode is a great way to create organic selections as opposed to using some of the more hard line tools here in this selection group.
