There isn't a single client I've ever had in my life who was happy with one version of anything and this is especially true if you're trying to pitch something. They want to see your creativity and layer comps can really help you when it comes to showing more that one version of something. So, as you see here in this document have this DVD cover and if I were to show this to a client and they didn't like it or they wanted to see some other variation this wouldn't get me the job. So what layer comps allow you to do if you go to the window menu and choose layer comps is to provide them with more than copy that you can quickly scroll through and cycle through. So let's go ahead and talk about how to do that. The first thing I'm gonna do is since I'm happy with the state that this document is in I'm gonna create a layer comp by clicking this button here and I'm gonna call this guy original. I'm also gonna make sure I have visibility, position, and appearance so that any of my styles that have been applied will remain there as well. I can also put a comment if I want to. So this is the exact state of the comp that the client hired me to create so this is what I'm gonna click OK. Now what I can do is I'm gonna move this guy down and hide it for now and I can rearrange things in my layers. So I'm gonna grab my layers and I can grab things like uh, for example, I can right click on the Photoshop 3 logo, move this down here, let me get the VTC logo, move it up here, right click again, and this is a faster way of, of selecting thing by the way instead of going through the layers all the time. I'm gonna right click on the iPOD artwork, move it over there. I'll grab the document window artwork, move it over here and then I'll save this version as version two. So I'm gonna go back to my layers comp panel, click on this icon again and call it version two. Once again I'm gonna keep everything here and I'll just put variety, click OK and now I'll create yet another layer comp. So I'm going to now change some of the other things here so let me go back to my layers and let me choose let's see here this layer here with the shape color. So I'm gonna double click on it and I'm going to put a drop shadow on there, I'll put it in a shadow and let me see what's going on here so I'm just changing the 00:02:04] style of this so far. And I'm going to just increase the size of the shadow and the spread and change that completely around to get this nice glow here. So I'm going to once again grab the Photoshop logo and I'll move it into the middle this time and I'll move the iPOD over a little bit and down and I'm gonna save this as version three, click OK and then I'll when my client is sitting right behind me I can say alright here are some of the ideas I have for you. Here's the original as per your instructions and as you see everything goes back to the default as I had it. Here's version two, here's some ideas I had that you might like and here's version three where I added a little bit more glow. So as you can see by selecting the option to save those styles, your glows and everything are maintained as well. You can also use these arrows here to cycle so your client can see what you want uh them to see make suggestions like, I like the glow and I want you to keep the iPOD logo or rather the iPOD artwork over here. And then you can also save states by using this button here so if the uh client says for example I want you to change something in version three and he says I want you to make the Photoshop logo over back on the bottom again. I can right click move the logo all the way down here, then click this button here and this will update that version for me. So it's very, very handy. Likewise, with most of the other panels I have options. I can click on the drop down arrow and I can create a new layer comp. I can duplicate a comp, I can delete one, I can update, and I can apply other comps I can do all kinds of cool things. I can also go to layer comp options here I can change the name, I can also change my state and so on. So it's a very handy way to access the same things you can get right from the functionality already contained within this panel. So I highly suggest that you use layers comps because it could really help you to provide your clients a variety of options when you're trying to pitch something for a job or even to show someone your concepts for something.
