Interface / Shortcuts
Subtitles of the Movie
If you'd like to change the shortcuts in Photoshop and by shortcuts I mean the guys over here that you see which contain certain commands, such as shift, option so and so and command this and command that and control this. We can go to the edit menu and slide all the way down to keyboard shortcuts. The dialog box appears and this will provide you with the opportunity to change shortcuts. As you see we can change keyboard shortcuts and we can also change menus. Now some of these guys will not be allowed, Photoshop will tell you straight up no you can't do it. So for example let me talk about some of the options here. Let me go to the applications menus in the Photoshop category here and show you that we have a shortcut for general and if I try to change this K to a G Photoshop is gonna give me warning telling me that its in, invalid shortcut and menu commands must include certain parameters. So be aware that as well. Sometimes you won't be able to change things without following specific instructions. Let's now move over to tools as you see here we have on the left hand side tool palette commands as well as the shortcuts associated with them by default. Now let's say that we don't want the elliptical marquee tool to have an M, we want to change it to an E. Well go ahead and click on the tool and then you can type your own letter here. Now I already know that this is already taken by Photoshop and its gonna give me a warning down here so I'm gonna type an E and there you go the shortcut E is already in use and will be removed from the erasure tool. Back on the erasure tool and the magic erasure tool if accepted. What that simply means is Photoshop is already giving E to these tools. So if you try to press E to get the erasure tool it's not going to work, you have to reassign another shortcut key or just live without it. So I'm going to accept that and let's say I really don't want to do that. I can either do the same thing backwards and make it this M or I can simply click undo. Once I'm happy with all the shortcuts I have modified by the way, I can do my menus as I've said before, I can do my keyboard shortcuts, I can choose all these different options here then I can simply save this set. So I click on the save icon and I can change it to whatever I like to. Ok so I can say Hunter Key Shortcuts and then as you see here it goes into a certain folder, move this up for you. It goes into the Adobe Photoshop CS3 presets keyboard shortcuts. So once again I have my Hunter Key Shortcuts and I can save that and I can send it to my friends in the email or anybody that's working on a project with me or anybody that I like to. I can also likewise load keyboard shortcuts the same exact way. Now a cool thing about this is that you can try to match shortcuts in a similar application so let me give you an example I use Lightwave 3D and I also use Z brush, now both tools have similar functions but not really. So I know that the tools that I use most such as rotate, scale and move, I wanna match so that when I am in Lightwave and I'm in Z brush I can press the same exact keys to perform the same operations. So every once in awhile when I am working in an application that has similar functions, I will try to match the shortcuts that way. So if you use Photoshop in conjunction with Indesign or any other application and there are certain keyboard shortcuts that your very familiar with and very comfortable with so you can get the applications working the way your most comfortable with. Once your finished click OK and the keyboard shortcuts will either be saved or if click cancel they won't be saved at all. So once again shortcuts will help you to manage your work flow to make things a little bit easier for you when you're working in Photoshop or like me when you're working in Photoshop and applications are similar to it so that the shortcuts will be pretty much the same across the board.
