Interface / Menus

Subtitles of the Movie

A menu is a way for you to access commonly used functions. Now the beauty of menus is that some of the commands that you'll use a lot such as saving or opening or closing documents have a keyboard shortcut that is attached to it so you don't have to constantly go up here. Now a little trick I'm wanna let you guys know for those of you who were thinking about working in a art studio. They can always tell a new person or an amateur by how often they go up to menu bar. So I really want to let you know that right now you want to really try to master the shortcut keys that are going to give you the functions that you are gonna be using while your in the studio. So trust me you don't want your boss looking over your shoulder and your constantly going let me see file, uh save as, and file open, and edit, no, don't do any of that. If you want to select everything go to select all look over here see what the shortcut key is memorize it. Memorize these things, write these things down and then eat the paper. So it's important, I just want to let you know that because I used to be an art director at a couple of studios and I could always tell the newbies because they were constantly going up here instead of you know telling me on their application that they worked with Photoshop twenty years. Anyway let's go back go to the menus, the menus are located up here on top of the interface for the main functions and you'll also gonna find that you have context sensitive menus as well. Which means that if you have a mouse with more then one button and you right click on part of the interface tools will pop up. So if I right click on this image something else pops up, if I right click over here something else pops up so its context sensitive based on where you right click. If you have one of those one button mice that some Macintosh's come with as opposed to buying a two button normal mouse what you can do to open up that same menu is simply hold down the control key on the keyboard first then clicking and then that menu will appear for you. So once again control click and the context sensitive menu will appear for you. Now there are other menus as well and even those these aren't really considered menus if you hold your mouse down over any tool that has a little black diamond here another pop up will appear so I just want to let you know that as well. Its not really a menu but I, I think a menu is anything that gives you options and that is something that gives you options, other tools. Now there is also options or menus in the actual panels themselves. For example let's look at layers very quickly, I'll tear that off and show you that we have this little icon here with a little drop down arrow and some little uh tools here, or rather lines. So if I click and hold my mouse down yet again, more tools, more menus, more options. So their all over the interface, their up here in our main menu bar, they are here whenever you see a little downward pointing arrow or a little diamond here and they are also located as a contextual menu by holding down the control key and clicking or right clicking as well as on several panels themselves.
