You can use vector shapes to create unique artwork in Photoshop CS3. As you see here I have my vector tool selected and I'm gonna start off with this tool here and use it as our example for everything. So this is our rectangle tool and with this tool I have some options as to how it's going to be drawn. First of all I can decide to draw it as a shape layer, paths, fill pixels and then when I decide what I'm gonna do I can then choose the shape, if I want to change the shape and I can also change the drawing implement. So I can use a regular pen, I can use the free form pen and I can also choose the custom shapes and then from this pop up list choose a shape to draw from or with. I can also go back to my other shape at anytime by clicking on it and once again I'm gonna go with the rectangle. I can also put a style on the shape, give it a different color and also use these tools to change how they intersect and combine with other shapes. So having said that I am going to make sure I am on my shape layer and I'm gonna draw the shape out like this and you'll notice in the layers palette or panel I have a mask that is actually filled with this color but is revealing the shape that we just finished drawing. What I can do now is go up here and click on this button here and add to the shape. I can click on this button here to subtract from this shape, I can use this one to intersect and I can use this one to exclude anything that is overlapping. So I can go like this. And if I don't want to see these lines anymore, the actual path lines, I can go to view and turn off extras. Now I'll go back to extras and put that back on. I can also once again apply any of the shapes to this new object that we just created. OK so now we've done that, I'm going to actually hide that and I'm going to create a brand new layer so we can talk about some of the other modes here. Such as this one here which is paths mode, so I can click and draw out a shape and if I grab my direct selection tool I can click on any of the points and I can change that shape entirely. Now that's a really cool thing. I can also go to my paths panel and I can fill this path with the foreground color. I'll undo that. I can stroke the path with the foreground color and I hope you can see that's red. I'll undo that. I can also load this path as a selection and I can also turn this path into a work path once it's loaded as a selection. So that's very hand as well if you want to trace something with the tools here you can always turn it into a selection filler with color, whatever you'd like to do. So I'm going to deselect that and I'm gonna go to the last mode here which is this one here and this is pretty much drawing with pixels. So I'm gonna draw out a rectangle and you'll notice this time that we are in pixel mode but we have some blend modes attached to it as well as the ability to anti alias and to change the opacity. Once again these are pixels I cannot deform this. You see that, it tells me that this is not available as far as you know using pixels and points. So this is like you would draw it with a paint bucket tool or the brush tool and any other tool, these are pixels. So the vector shapes once again allow you the ability to use vectors to create really cool artwork in Photoshop CS3.
