When you select one of Photoshop's shape tools, and those are found right here on the tools palette, notice the, how the options' palette changes to give you various options for our shape tools. I want to talk about these first three buttons, which will allow you to create different types of shapes, basically creating different shape modes. The first mode will create a vector-based shape layer, and it will use your currently selected foreground color to create the fill color. So just drag out diagonally a rectangular shape, and you can see what Photoshop did is it adds it as a shape layer on my layers' palette. This next mode will generate a path, based on whatever type of standard shape I've selected up here. I'll just stick with my rectangular shape and drag it out, and you can see that it created a path. And if we go to our paths palette, I can see that it's been added as my work path. I'll go back to layers. If I click on this button right now, notice that Photoshop is giving me a warning, because I cannot use this particular mode with a vector-base shape layer. Because it wants to fill with pixels, and the nature of this particular layer is vector in nature, so I need to choose a layer which supports pixel information or raster information, such as my apple layer. So I'll go ahead and select the fill mode, and notice the options available to me are essentially choosing a different type of blending mode, and an opacity for my pixel fill. And now when I drag it out, it will simply fill this area on my apple layer with that foreground color. And you can see it's updated my thumbnail to show that information.
