Selection & Masks / Magnetic Lasso
Subtitles of the Movie
The magnetic lasso tool is a tremendous addition to Adobe Photoshop. It's not new to Photoshop 7, but it is a great tool allowing you to easily create lasso, freehand selections with the assistance of edge detection. This is the magnetic lasso tool, it's one of the lasso tools you can choose from, and it has a little magnet next to it. So choose that, and once you do choose that notice the options that we have available to us in the options palette - very similar to the lasso tool, allowing you to create a feathered selection, and an anti-aliased edge. But we have is the ability to determine how big the sensitive area is for our brush. And I'm going to dial this down to 10-pixels. And notice when I move into my image there is a circular marquee with a little crosshair in the middle of it. So the magnetic lasso tool is going to look inside that circle for edge contrast to add anchor points and eventually create a selection. And if we increase this value, it will create a larger area for it to look into. So I'm going to go round this cow here, and I'm going to stick with my 10-pixels diameter, which seems to be pretty good. And also we have the ability to tell the magnetic lasso to how contrasty our image is in terms of the edge contrast that it needs to look for. So if you have a very obviously high contrast edge, you can make a little bit easier for the magnetic lasso by increasing the contrast value. I'm going to stick with a 20% value, because I think my edge contrast is fairly low. And finally, we have the ability to tell the magnetic lasso about how many anchor points to add. And you can change this value from between 1 and 100. The lower the number the less anchor points are added to help create the final selection. I'm going to stick with the pretty high value - I'll go with about 70. And now the way this works is, all you need to do is click once on the edge of my cow here to start my magnetic lasso selection. So I'm going to click once, and then just drag my mouse over the edge of this cow here, and if it starts to add anchor points on an area that I don't want to, and you can see that I am, it's starting to add, it wants to go down to the edge of this cow, you can always click to add your own anchor point. And when you do that, you are sort of helping out the magnetic lasso tool. So I'm not even clicking I'm just dragging over the edge. And I can see I need to click to add an anchor point there. I'll come back and keep going around the edge of this cow here. With a lot of these tools, they might not do a perfect job, but they are going to do a pretty good job - saving you a lot of time. But you might have to go and back edit with another tool to create a more perfect selection. And it did a nice job of separating this cow with the other cow behind it. And when I pass back over my first anchor point, the cursor changes to show me the magnetic lasso tool icon with a little circle next to it, indicating that all I need to do is click again and it will create a selection for me. Well I can see it did a pretty good job, but I need to make a few changes here - such as add the yellow ear tag. So I'm going to switch to my regular freehand lasso tool by holding down the shift key and typing 'L'. And that will switch to my regular lasso tool. I could have just gone over to tool bar and chosen that by pressing and holding on the lasso tool, and choosing the freehand lasso tool. And now I'm going to add to my selection by holding down the shift key, and notice when I do that of course I get the plus next to my cursor icon. So I'm just going to add that ear right there, and I'm going to turn my feather value down to zero. See that could be a problem. Now try that again - there we go. And I'm also going to create a small hole here for where there is a hole between the tail and the cow. So I'm going to hold down the option key on the Mac or the Alt key on the PC to take away from my selection. So this way, you can create further edits and improvements of your selection. And there is my selection made with the magnetic lasso tool with a few edits the regular freehand lasso tool.
