Selection & Masks / Lasso Tool

Subtitles of the Movie

The lasso tool allows you to create freehand selections. So I'm going to go ahead and make sure my feather value is set to zero here. And with that set to zero, choose the lasso tool right here. And it's the tool which looks like a lasso. And now I can simply click and drag a shape in my document and create a selection based on that shape. I'm just going to fill that with my foreground color, talk about some of the options that we have. Of course you can create a non anti-aliased selection by disabling anti-alias, and we can also create a feathered edge for our freehand selection by adding a value here. So I'm going to type in 20 and create a new freehand selection here. And fill that with my foreground color. This way we could make some very quick selections with a slight feathered edge. I'm going to dial this down to about 10-pixels. And I'm going to go round this cow here. And I'll copy and paste that, so I'm going to choose command + 'C' to copy to the clipboard. Deselect and command + 'V' will paste my cow in the middle of the image. Similar to the lasso tool, we have another type of freehand tool. And that is the polygonal lasso tool. And what this does is it will generate selections based on wherever you create mouse clicks to create straight-line segments. So I'm clicking to add a straight-line segment here. And notice when I pass back over the beginning of my selection, I get a little polygonal lasso tool with a small circle next to it indicating that when I click now, it will close that path, so to say, and create my polygonal lasso selection.
