One important thing to understand when working with layers is how you select a layer. The easiest way to select a layer is to have your layers palette up on your computer screen, and simply click on the layer name that you want to select and edit. And notice that when I'm using my layer mover tool, one of the options in the options palette is to show the bounding box around all the pixel data in that layer. So I'm going to go back up to my dandelion layer and select it. And notice that it's showing me the bounding box around the pixel data in this layer. The bounding box is this little dashed rectangle with handlebars on the corners and in the middle of each side. Sometimes, we might want to rename a layer so that you can select it in another way. I'm going to click, double click on the name, so that it is editable, and I'll just call this flower. I'll double click on this name, select text and call this triangle. And do the same for my cow. Another way that you can select layers is, while you are using your layer mover tool, on the Macintosh hold down the control key or on the PC the right mouse button, and your cursor will turn into this type of cursor with a small menu icon next to it. And that means that whatever pixel that I press on, it will show me all the layers that are underneath that particular pixel - in this case the flower and cow. And so this way I can immediately choose my flower layer by control clicking on that. So you can see that right here, control clicking will show me the flower, cow, and background. But if I control click right here, I can also choose to triangle because right underneath that pixel that I clicked on the triangle pixel data was also available in my layers palette to choose from. Another option we have is to auto select the layer. And the way this works is that whatever layer that you click on that has pixel data underneath it will be selected. So if I click in the background here, I'll be selecting my background layer. If I click on my cow, I'd be selecting my cow layer. But if I click on the flower, which is in front of my cow, I'll be selecting the top most layer which has pixel data that I can click on, in this case is the flower. Sometimes I use auto select, but more often than not I have that disabled, so that my mover tool only operates on my currently selected layer. And I very often use my control key option to have a popup menu show up for all the layers that have pixel data underneath the pixel that I clicked on.
