Adding a layer in Photoshop is quite simple. At the bottom of the layers palette there is the new layer icon, and all I need to do is click on this to add a new empty layer. So here's my new empty layer, and I could of course go and add something such as paint some marks on this particular layer. I also what to point out that when you are using the mover tool, one of your options in the options palette is show bounding box. And that is this box with the handlebars that goes around all the pixel data on this layer. So if I go ahead and edit this layer again and make some more marks on it, I'll go back to my mover tool, notice how the bounding box expands to include all the pixel data on this layer. You can easily copy a layer and make an exact copy of it. So I'll go ahead and copy the dandelion layer, and all I need to do so select that layer by clicking on it and click and drag the dandelion layer thumbnail down to the new layer icon, and it will create an exact copy of it in perfect registration. So you can see it doesn't look like I have a copy, but if I drag this one out of the way there is my original in the background. And if you want to delete a layer, it's quite simple also. All I need to do is select that layer and click the trashcan icon, and it will actually ask me if I want to delete it? You can say yes. Or another way you can delete a layer is to drag the thumbnail down to the trashcan icon. And it will simply be deleted from your layers palette. Another option you have of course to add a layer is to copy and paste pixel data. So I have my snail image here, and there is a selection around it. So I'm just going to go choose edit menu>copy. Copy that snail to the clipboard, go back to my image, and choose edit menu>paste or command + 'V'. And Photoshop will paste that pixel data on its own new layer.
