Getting Started / Imaging Process
Subtitles of the Movie
Before we get into working with Adobe Photoshop and images proper, I wanted to give you an overview of the basic imaging process. And in a nutshell, in general it's quite simple. There's getting the images in, the input. There's the image management, and that is a big fuzzy gray word, which generally can mean working in Adobe Photoshop, but it can mean working in many other applications as well. And then there is the getting the images out or output. Just to expand a little bit on that, imagine if you will, how many different ways you will get images into your computer. I have a digital camera, and many of these pictures were made with a digital camera. I have a film-based camera, which I will scan pictures using my slide scanner. And I have access to a flat bed scanner, which allows me to scan flat art as well. And quite simply I could launch Photoshop and just create a new blank document and begin painting. So there are at least four different ways of getting images into Adobe Photoshop. Image management of course is what means whatever you need it to mean. At the very least, it can mean doing color correction to your images and perhaps cropping them and resizing them. But of course it can mean much, much more. And Photoshop gives you the power to really to do what you need in terms of image management. Particularly with it's powerful ability to manipulate layers. And finally there is output. What do you want to do with this graphic image that you are working with? Do you want to print it on a inkjet printer? Is it going to be printed in an offset type of press environment, such as maybe it is going into a page layout program destined for offset printing? Is it going to live on the World Wide Web as a web graphic? Well, essentially you need to understand what your output needs are before you begin doing image management, and understanding your output needs will help you understand what kind of input needs you will have. So it's helpful to understand the end game of your imaging project in order to optimize your time while working in Photoshop, and making the best decisions early on.
