Getting Started / What is Photoshop?

Subtitles of the Movie

Well what is Photoshop anyway? I've created this cool graphic to give you an idea, and I'll just hit the tab key on my keyboard to hide the palettes on the screen so you can see my core graphic. Photoshop is the biggest toolbox for imaging. It's the ultimate Swiss army knife for all your imaging needs. So when I say imaging, I am using that in a very broad context. With Photoshop you can do basic to very sophisticated image editing. From simply taking out the red-eye from a bad flash photograph, to creating very complex and sophisticated composite or collage images. You can also simply create a new document and begin to paint in Photoshop. You don't actually need to have any original content or photographs, you can simply create your own content by using it as a painting application. You can create all sorts of art this way. Of course you can use it to create websites and website content, as well as edit that content. And you can add special effects to images. And another nice feature of Photoshop is it is tightly integrated with many other Adobe applications such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and GoLive. And for that matter most of the file formats that Photoshop can generate and read to are standard file formats. So if you are not working with Adobe software, you can work with other software with Adobe Photoshop. And on and on, as I say. Photoshop is simply a huge collection of tools and techniques, allowing you to create and edit images or graphics in any way that you really wish. So the more you know about Photoshop, the more powerful the tools you'll have available to you. And in the next set of tutorials I want to give you an overview of how many of these tools and techniques work. Especially focusing on one of my favorite features of Photoshop, and that is the ability to work with the layers.
