It's easy enough to convert an RGB image into a grayscale image. All you need to do is go to image menu>mode and choose grayscale. But before I do that, I'm going to duplicate this image to show you another technique that I often use. Remember that my RGB image is composed of this grayscale channel of red information pushed through a red filter. And the same for this green information pushed through a green filter, and finally the blue information pushed through a blue filter - giving me my full color RGB image. Well when I choose image menu>mode>grayscale, Photoshop will average the brightness values between these three colored channels to give me my grayscale image. I'm going to go to this particular colored image here, and show you another technique. If you are using the channels palette, go to the channels palette menu item and choose split channels. And what this will do is it will create 3 documents based on the channel information. So we have one document that contains the green information, one that contains the red and one that contains the blue. So in this way, I can pick which one of my grayscale components I think might make the best grayscale image. And I think I am going to stick with the green one, because it has a little bit more detail in the petals. And the blue one simply looks too dark, and doesn't separate well from the background. So I'm going to go ahead and get rid of these. And I'll make this one a little smaller to compare it, and I think indeed my green information version of my grayscale document looks little bit more interesting than the averaged brightness value grayscale version of document. If I go to the image menu>mode it says grayscale, so it's being converted automatically to a grayscale document.
