Another new option you have with the gray scale image is to convert it into a duotone. Under image menu>mode choose duotone, and it brings up the duotone options dialogue box. There are actually several types of duotones to choose from, one's are monotone only using one color of ink. Duotone of course uses two colors of inks, and and tritones - three, and quadtones - four. If you want, you can also load some of the many duotone presets by clicking on the load button, and it will take you to a section in the Photoshop folder for duotones. And you could see that there are 3 types of collections of presets. So I'm just going to go ahead and open up the duotone folder, and in the duotone folder we could choose from a further set of 3 different options. We have an option to use processed color duotones or pantone duotones. And I think I'll choose the pantone duotones. So what the duotone type of effect will do is, it will mix in this case a pantone color with black. I think I'll choose one of these different ones. The purple pantone 527 and select it and click load. And you can see what it does is it mixes the brightness values of my document's pixels. For the duotone dialogue box, we have a section here which relates to the curve of our brightness value. If you click on it, it shows me the duotone curve, and how the brightness values of this particular ink, in this case black, will be mixed. And we also have one for of my pantone. And notice that the pantone 527 does not go all the way to the black value, so my purple values here are going to be mixed in the lighter areas, but not all the way to black. One thing you should understand about duotone - if you are going to use this effect, you might need to save it out as an EPS document. From file menu choose save as, and with the duotone notice when I click on format, I only have a handful of formats to choose from. One of them is the Photoshop EPS, and I might choose this if I were planning to place my duotone in a page layout program, and when I did that, I would tell my service provider to use this special color ink, the pantone 527, along with black ink to create this very nice colorized effect.
