Well if there is one thing that Photoshop excels at, it's allowing you to create various types of image adjustments. With this image up on my screen, go to the image menu and choose adjustments, and notice the many different options that are available to us. I want to talk about many of these in the next few lessons, but the first one I want to talk about is brightness and contrast. This brings up a fairly simple dialogue box, allowing you to adjust the brightness and contrast of our image, as the name suggests. The top slider allows me to adjust the brightness. If I drag it to the right that will make my image brighter, and to the left to make it darker. And you can see that the values here are percentages. So we can also simply select that value and type in a number. Or if we want, you can type 100 and it would make it 100% brighter. But generally I find that I like to drag the sliders, with making sure that preview is enabled. So I can see how this effect will be updated immediately on my image. Contrast will of course affect the contrast, so the more we drag it to the right the more contrasty my image is; and conversely the more we drag to the left the less contrasty this image is. At any time if you hold down the option key on the Mac or the Alt key on the PC, notice that the cancel button changes to reset. So I could click on reset and this particular dialogue box will zero out any changes, bringing me back to the default settings. Also I want to point out that all of these effects that we can run for image adjustments will also work if you have a selection available. So if I use my magic wand tool here and select the sky, and then go back to image menu>adjustments>brightness and contrast. Now of course any edits that I make using this dialogue box will be affecting my selection only. So there is my more contrasty sky, and that's what it looked like before I ran the adjustment.
