I've zoomed in to 100% so that we can see how these next set of tools work. The next set of tools are 3 different tools and two of them sort of relate - the blur tool and the sharpen tool and then the last tool is the smudge tool. Well the first two I want to talk about is the blur tool and what this does is of course is it essentially allows you to paint on a blurring effect, sort of like a Gaussian blur filter but in a paint brush. So you can see that in our options palette, we have the slider for the strength of the effect, and we could also choose from a different type of mode. But I'm going to choose the normal mode to show you how this tool works. And you can see that I have a very sharp section of my flower here. And if I begin to paint over it, you can see that what it does is it essentially blurs that area. And of course dialing down the strength would create less of that effect when we paint on that area. Well the opposite of blur is the sharpen tool, and I'm going to go ahead and hit my right bracket key to increase my brush size. And you can see what the sharpen tool does is it increases the local edge contrast. Sometimes this can create crystal like artefacts, which means that you have gone overboard on your sharpening so I'm going to undo that and turn down my strength a bit. Just paint a little bit, and what this will do is it will actually increase a contrast between contrasting pixels. So an area of solid yellow - it is not going to do much. But where my yellow meets a different colored background, it will actually increase the contrast between those contrasty pixels. And if we increase this value a lot, you can immediately see the crystal like artefacts. Well the last tool I want to talk about is the smudge tool, and what this will do of course is smudge your pixels. You can create some very interesting effects using the smudge tool. Also might enable finger painting, which creates a slightly different effect. Sometimes what I like to do with the smudge tool is change modes, say color and start to smudge. And this way you can see that I'm actually smudging the hue and saturation of my flower petals, but not the actual brightness values.
