Well you're probably wondering how you can add a custom shape to the custom shapes library. Well in order to add a custom shape, first you need to create one. So I am going to create my custom blob here by using the Pen tool. Here is my custom shape. With my custom shape selected on the shape layer, I'm going to go to Edit menu and choose Define Custom Shape, and you can see what it does is it creates a little black and white thumbnail of it, and asks you to name it. I'll click OK. And now if we go to our Shape tool and click on the shape library icon, here's the custom shape I just made. I can drag that out, and keep adding that as many times as I want, because this custom shape has been added to the currently open shape library. OK, well that's pretty simple. You can also create custom brushes and custom patterns very much the same way. So to show you how to create a custom pattern, I'm going to just paint on my white background here. So there's the little squiggle I made. I'm going to use my rectangular Selection tool. And you need to use this, because the pattern will be based on the contents of what is inside a rectangular selection. So, I'm going to hold down the Shift key and create a square, and create a pattern based on what is inside this rectangular selection. So I'll go to the Edit menu>Define Pattern, and there is what my pattern will look like. And I'll just give it a name, 'green lines', click OK and de-select. And now I can use that pattern to fill any selection or layer. So with my background layer selected, I'm going to go to Edit menu and choose Fill. And instead of the color white, I'll choose Pattern. And when you choose Pattern, it brings up the pattern library button that I can click on, and choose from any one of these patterns that is in my currently loaded library. So I'll click on this one, which looks like the pattern I just made, Click OK and you can see that Photoshop has filled this square with my square pattern, repeating it or tiling it. Well, that's pretty simple. Finally I can also create a custom brush based on any pixel-based data. So before I do that, I'm going to get rid of my No I won't, I'll simply paint over it. A brush is based on grayscale values. So even if I created a brush based on this green squiggle, it would convert it to [the] appropriate grayscale value. So I'm going to choose black paint and create a swirly line, and here's my line that I'm going to create my custom brush from. So very similar to creating a pattern, I'm going to choose my rectangular marquee tool, and hold my Shift key down and drag diagonally over this and choose Edit menu>Define Brush. It also is showing me the pixel count of my brush size, in which case it is 84 pixels square. Click OK, deselect. And now I can paint with that brush. I'm going pick this green color, choose an airbrush, and go up to my brushes library and click on it, and scroll down because it will be the last one in the library, since brushes are always added last to your collection, and click on it to select it. And there is my custom brush. And of course I can edit all the different aspects of that brush like how fast it repeats, and what not. You can create a custom brush based on the brightness values of a photographic image, like here's my apple. Drag this up to some area here, and I'll flatten it. Just want to make sure that there is no color in my apple. So here's my apple with my marquee around it. Edit menu>Define Brush, and now you can see that it has been selected also. And there you go, using my custom apple brush. It's pretty cool, it's pretty easy to define brushes, patterns and custom shapes in Photoshop. It's a very powerful feature.
