Starting to Work / Selections and Layers
Subtitles of the Movie
[00:00:00.0] In this movie, I want to show you how the selection tools works. [00:00:03.0] And, I'm going to show how the selection tool works in conjunction with the Layers palette. [00:00:10.0] Photoshop allows you to construct multi-layered images. [00:00:15.0] And you can see here I have on my Layers palette four distinct layers. [00:00:21.0] The way to think of the Layers palette is [00:00:25.0] to put your eyeball at the top of the layers palette here, and your eye is looking down through these layers. [00:00:32.0] At the very bottom of my Layers palette is a layer called the background. [00:00:38.0] And above that is layer1, which is this blue object, and this brown object, and finally this oval green object here. [00:00:49.0] I'm going to use a selection marquee, and I'll use the rectangular selection marquee, and I'll create a small selection. [00:01:04.0] Now whatever layer is currently selected, and I can select a layer simply by clicking on its name, [00:01:13.0] that would be the layer that I would edit with this selection. [00:01:19.0] And what I'm going to do with this selection is to copy some of the data. [00:01:24.0] So right now if I choose copy, that's Edit menu>Copy, and I'll choose Edit menu>Paste. [00:01:34.0] You can see what it did is it copied data from this layer that I had selected. [00:01:42.0] I'll throw this new layer away, and create a selection again. At this time I'll target the layer underneath it. [00:01:53.0] So now even though it looks as if this selection is going to copy the green oval shape, [00:02:01.0] it will actually be copying data from this brown shape - because this is the currently selected layer. [00:02:08.0] Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste. [00:02:13.0] In fact, I'll move that up, that is what it copied - [00:02:21.0] remember because I had this layer selected. [00:02:24.0] So the point I'm trying to make is that even though you see a selection and it visually seems to be in front of something, [00:02:35.0] it really only relates to whatever layer you have targeted. [00:02:39.0] Selections don't care what layer its on; they will work on any layer. [00:02:46.0] Selections don not care what layer is targeted; they will be active on whatever layer is targeted and selected. [00:02:52.0] [00:02:55.0]
