Adobe Photoshop 6 Tutorials

Introduction / Open/New Document

Subtitles of the Movie

Ok, now that you know how some of the tools work in Photoshop, you're probably ready to get going and start editing some pictures. For this last movie in the Intro section I want to show you how to open a file or create a new file under the File menu. There are two options I can choose to create a brand new blank image to do some image editing. File>New and it bring up a dialog box asking me to type in some parameters for my new document. I can give it a name, or I can choose not to give it name and worry about that later when I save the document. And it also asks me some size parameters - how many inches wide and tall that do I want to make it? Currently I have 6 selected here; I could also choose different ways of measuring it. Do I want to measure in terms of pixels, centimeters, points, picas or columns? I usually stick to inches or pixels, depending if I am doing some web image editing. And what is my resolution? Notice that if I change any of these parameters, this number right here, image size, changes to tell me how big this image will be. So if I click 8 my image is getting larger. And also if I choose to change my resolution, say 300 if I'm doing a print project, this number is changed also. I think I'll stick to 72 since I am doing all work on my screen right here. What color model do I want to create this image in - RGB, grayscale bitmap, CMYK or LAB color? For the most part, I am going to work in RGB considering the output device - I am currently using this computer monitor as an RGB device. Choose if you want a white background, or do you want the background color currently selected, which in this case is white, or if you want to work on a transparent layer. For now I will just choose white. And here is my new image, and I can make some marks and start editing right now. I could also open up an image that I have previously scanned in - File menu>Open, and it brings up a dialog box asking me to pick a picture that I have already scanned in. So I could just select that by clicking on the name or using the arrow keys to move up and down. This brings up a typical open or save dialog box, allowing you to navigate your computer's hard drive directory structure. So here are my objects on my desktop, but I've put all my pictures in this particular folder. So I'm going to double click on it and choose the picture of the apple to open. And there you go - we're ready to do some image editing.
