Introduction / New in Photoshop 6

Subtitles of the Movie

Well, if you are familiar with Adobe Photoshop, you might be curious about what is new in Photoshop 6, and is it worth the upgrade? Quite simply, it is worth the upgrade - they've added a lot of great new features and improved a lot of features as well. The first thing I would point to, and perhaps the most important thing at least for myself, is enhanced layers palette and layer options. Notice I've added some type effects here on the 'What's New, Pussycat?' type right here. And I've actually added effects which are easily editable and are not actually added to my layer. They're editable on my layer. You can turn the effects on or off, and you can turn them on and off individually. So I've turned off my drop shadow, and I'll turn off the bevel. Photoshop is rendering these on the fly, so you can add these to anything - raster or vector image on a fly. Very nice feature. Photoshop's type tool has been greatly enhanced, and it works a lot like Adobe Illustrator. If you want to edit type now, you don't have to go into a different interface. You can simply select the type by dragging over it with the type tool and type in whatever it is you want to type - very powerful. And there is a lot more features associated with this type tool, which we'll be talking about later. Photoshop 6 has a new vector layer or vector shapes added to it. And if you are familiar with Illustrator, you will be immediately familiar with how this works. Select the pen tool, and instead of creating a path, which you'd normally do, you can actually create a vector-based shape. And you can see what it actually does is it creates a path here on my Paths palette, and adds it to a layer mask, and uses a fill of solid color from my layer mask to edit. It's very clever, and we'll talk about that in more detail. Photoshop 6 has better web integration. It has of course our favorite Save for Web saving interface. And it comes with ImageReady 3. Adobe ImageReady is Adobe's web optimization and web editing image software. It's very powerful software if you work for If you do work that will be published on the World Wide Web, you're going to want to get ImageReady 3 and learn how it works, because it's very powerful and really make things a lot simpler. One of my favorite features in ImageReady 3 is, the ability to save optimized JPEGs with different optimization settings for different areas. The Options palette has now been changed and added to the top as a long strip here in Photoshop. You can still break this off and have it float around as a actual palette. But it's so long, that frankly I find it makes the most sense to leave it at the top or the bottom of your screen. I usually leave it at the top. One of the nice things about the new Options palette - it allows you to make some edits through the Options palette. So if I create a selection here, instead of having to simply remember the keyboard shortcut to add to the selection, I can choose to add to the selection by passing over one of these options (and I believe it's this one) - Add to selection. And now if I create another selection, it'll actually add to that selection. So that's a nice new setup and new feature - is these keyboard shortcuts are now also buttons on the Options palette. The Liquefy interface, which I would call a filter except it's a very interesting and strange new creature in Photoshop - I'll show you more how that works later. Photoshop 6 comes with the preset library manager. Edit menu>Preset Manager. And for every library of different objects in Photoshop, such as the collection of brushes, color swatches, gradients - you can create custom libraries, say if you are working on a project, or you have to share certain files with different team members. You could create these libraries and have them served up via a remote server. So, it's a very convenient way to organize all your custom items, such as custom brushes and swatches and gradients and things like that. Photoshop has streamlined the color management tools. Under Edit>Color Settings, it brings up what look's to be a fairly simple interface, but in fact, it is very robust and can really save you a lot of time. But it does deserve a bit of attention and education about how color management works. Finally there is a lot more in Photoshop 6 that's new, that I'm not going to talk about now, and we'll talk about as the movies progress. It's suffices to say that Photoshop 6 is a great upgrade, and well worth the money.
