Sometimes you need to create a new mask based on the results of combining two different masks. For instance, I want to create a glow around my Porsche here. So what I've done is I have created this new mask channel that is a sharp outline of the car. And I have created another mask channel at the very bottom called 'car blur'. And of course to select it, all you need to do is simply click on the name. So this is the 'car blur' and what I want to do is chop away the sharp edged car and create a new mask with that result, and then load that as a selection and fill it with some kind of color to create the blur effect. In order to do that, I am going to use what Photoshop has called calculations. So under the Image menu, choose Calculations. What calculations does is it looks for two sources, and allows you to combine these source's brightness values in some way to generate a final effect, either a new mask channel or a selection. Incidentally you can extract sources from other images, if they are the exact same pixel dimension as the one you are working with. So for source 1, I am going Channel: car. And for source 2, I will choose Channel: car blur. And you can see that adding for blending mode is not the right blending mode, because it's resulting in basically the same thing as my car blur. What I want to do is choose Multiply or Darken. And I can see that basically what I am getting is the same thing as my car mask - so that's not right either. What I need to do of course is invert one of these channels. So first I'll enable this one, and that's one looks like the right one to invert. Finally at the bottom of the calculations dialog box, it asks me how I want to use my result. Do you want to create a new channel, or a new document that is the result of this calculation, or simply load it as a selection immediately? If I wish I could push this effect through a mask, and the only other mask that I have currently on this document is my sky. But that's not necessary, because I really don't want that effect. What I do want is for Calculations to generate a new mask channel here on my channels palette. And I can see (since Preview is enabled) that this will be my final effect, and that's pretty close to what I had envisioned. So I'll click OK, and there is my new mask channel. I want to load that as a selection. So first I'll go back to RGB, because I want to create my glowing effect on the RGB image. Select menu>Load Selection, and the channel I want to load is my new alpha1 as a new selection. And there it is, but I think I need a cool color for my glow. And I will choose Edit menu>Fill with my foreground color at about 50%. So there is now my Porsche image, with the green glow around it. And of course, I created that glow by generating my aggregate mask using the Calculations command.
